ASI MESSAGE
we are in when flying. The Boeing 737 Max 8 crash in Ethiopia is one
example. In a nose down, out-of-control scenario, accelerating toward
the ground, the pilots left the throttles at takeoff thrust. Why? It was a
complicated problem, but why did they not at least pull the throttles out of
takeoff power? Wouldn't they have heard the air noise; seen the airspeed;
heard the engines; noticed the throttles? They likely never heard or saw any
of the indicators. Remember the physiological responses the crew was likely
experiencing-tunnel vision, tunnel hearing, rapid heart rate, and extreme
focus on what appeared to be their biggest problem (pitch control).
Let's go back to our first scenario and " unfreeze. " What happened, and
how should you respond? How fast can your brain run U.S. Air Force Col.
John Boyd's OODA loop (observe, orient, decide, act) to make an accurate
assessment of the situation, decide on a strategy, and act? You only have
seconds, and your reaction could determine your survival. Studies show
that the more you run this scenario and the deeper and fresher your
knowledge, the better you will perform. You don't need physical strength,
you need fresh short-term memory to recognize a blown tire, and you'll
need to have already thought through the situation so you can mitigate the
impacts of your body's startle reaction and move quickly and methodically
through your response.
We can't re-create every potential crisis in flight training, but we can create
them mentally and think deliberately and methodically about how it will
feel, how it will sound, and what our reaction will be. We can review our
systems and emergency checklists so our knowledge is deep and fresh:
engine failure, in-flight fire, rapid depressurization. Should these ever occur,
our knowledge and preparation will help us work through our sub-optimal
physical state to take the proper actions for a successful recovery.
Fly safe!
