shop, take some pictures of an engine compartment so you can explain
the systems.

WHAT TOP FAR OR AIM ITEMS OUGHT TO BE MEMORY ITEMS?
Certificate applicants are allowed to bring FAA references with them.
If an applicant has to look up a regulation or a detail that wouldn't
be required in an emergency situation, no problem. If, however, they have
to refer to the FARs, the AIM, or other resources more than a few times
during the practical, I consider they haven't used the airman certification
standards appropriately-the ACS is the test. I certainly don't want them
to consult reference materials when explaining how to recover from a stall,
spin, or unusual attitude.
I also want to know that they have basic weather knowledge " in
their head " -for example, the direction of flow around a high or low
pressure center.
The national airspace system, classes of airspace and their weather and
equipment requirements, and special-use airspace are trip up points. Make
sure your students understand where on a sectional chart they may find
information regarding special-use airspace, know how to use the legend,
and that they can explain the changes in the airspace requirements along
the route of their cross-country scenario.

WHAT ISSUES OR DEFICIENCIES DO YOU SEE WITH COMMERCIAL
PILOT APPLICANTS?
Commercial pilot applicants always fear the power-off 180-degree
accuracy approach and landing. Remember that while training for the
commercial pilot certificate, go-arounds are used for safety's sake only, not to
save the maneuver. On the practical test, a go-around to save the maneuver will
cause a notice of disapproval.
Another issue that has come up on several occasions was when an applicant
arrived with their long solo cross-country (or performing the duties of PIC in
an airplane with an authorized instructor on board) that was logged with a
passenger on board. Their argument was that the passenger was not a pilot.
That is not solo. Double check the wording of FAR 61.129(4)(i). Commercial pilot
candidates also really need to understand the conditions in which a commercial
flight can be made. No gray FAR Part 135 allowed.
