ACCIDENT CASE STUDy

AIRPORT JUST SOUTHWEST OF SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH.
The pilot has planned a cross-country flight to Page,
Arizona, and then a sightseeing flight over the Grand
Canyon-a treat to cap his family's Utah vacation.
Accident Case Study: High Aspirations, recreates the
events that led the Piper Cherokee Lance to crash only
minutes after takeoff.
Join the AOPA Air Safety Institute as we examine the
circumstances that led to the tragic outcome of the flight.
We look at factors that would affect the flight, including
high-density altitude conditions.
Please share this video with your clients to help
them understand how critical it is to recognize how
high density altitude can adversely affect aircraft
performance, especially when optimum performance
is needed during takeoffs and landings. Please, also
remind your learners that performance data found in the
POH can mislead us-this is why the AOPA Air Safety
Institute recommends padding performance numbers
by 50 percent to account for differences between
the manufacturer's published numbers and what we
typically can expect in actual operational conditions.
Accident Case Studies use FAA air traffic control radio
communication transcripts, National Transportation
Safety Board documentation, and video animation to
recreate the dynamics and track each accident's chain
of events. The videos share critical lessons to help pilots
recognize and avoid similar mistakes.
Density Altitude:
Beware of Thin Air
High altitude, high temperature, and high
humidity create less dense or thinner air that
contributes to high density altitude and impacts
aircraft and engine performance. The AOPA
Air Safety Institute created a resources article
to remind pilots who intend to operate at high
density altitude airports how to protect against
the ill effects of high density altitude on aircraft
performance. Modify and use the AOPA Air Safety
Institute's Density Altitude Poster to quickly know
the density altitude values at your airport on a
standard day.
