FROM THE EDITOR CFI NOTES WE NEED YOUR HELP-WHAT DOES 'NOT IN THE VICINITY OF AN AIRPORT' MEAN? MACHTELD SMITH FAR 91.103(a) tells us that during preflight planning, in addition to becoming familiar with all available information concerning the flight, for a flight under IFR or not in the vicinity of an airport, the information must include weather reports and forecasts, fuel requirements, alternatives available, and any known traffic delays. The FAA does not define " vicinity. " So, how do you interpret " not in the vicinity " of an airport? Please take our 1-minute survey to participate in this AOPA Air Safety Institute study. We'll publish the findings in the next CFItoCFI issue. PLEASE CLICK THE SURVEY BUTTON TO OPEN THE SURVEY SURVEY Note: All responses are confidential-we do not solicit your personal information.
