the instruction our students need at the time they need it. It's actually a
core principle of effective teaching! The challenge is keeping track of the
changes you've made so that you don't miss anything when you start to
edit the syllabus " on the fly " (pun intended). This concept also happens
to be at the heart of why we ended up creating the AOPA Flight Training
Advantage (AFTA).
I was teaching a student pilot using a traditional paper syllabus, and as
I looked at the next lesson, I found myself wishing that I could have a
more " modular " system that would let me create the lessons I felt would
serve my student while also helping me keep track of what training
needed to be accomplished. The more I thought about the concept it
made me realize how useful it would be to completely craft the lessons
to fit my students' progress. For example, if someone picks up on radio
communications and navigation quickly, why not let them progress in
that area while continuing work on other areas where they might be
advancing a little more slowly? Maybe you have a student who is working
on landings but has excelled in all the other " pre-solo " skills. Why
not start teaching some cross-country navigation skills and practice
landing at some of the other airports you visit?
This idea changed my thinking on the need to accomplish the traditional
flight milestones completely before moving on to the next stage. CFIs
could gain efficiencies for their students by letting them learn at their
own pace and allowing them to advance in their strength areas while
they continued to progress in other areas. AFTA was developed with
that very idea in mind. Take all of the ACS tasks, core flying skills, and
ground topic areas and organize them in a system that helps CFIs select
the next logical skills or maneuvers to teach their students in a way that
fits their individual progress.
The cool thing is that at as I write this, our IT team has just released
an update to AFTA that gives CFIs even more flexibility to edit lessons
