CHIEFS CORNER At that particular point in time, I didn't have anybody who needed help but I kept his number and he would stop by from time to time as he finished settling into his new house in the area. We'd chat and he'd ask me how things were going, and we'd talk about flying and teaching. One day I told him that I had a student who was having a problem getting comfortable with stalls and stall recoveries. He smiled and told me to schedule them together for the next lesson. I did and when they came back, Ed told me that he'd been able to get them more comfortable with stalls and that on the next flight they'd be good. Well, the next flight we did stalls and sure enough, my student was setting up the maneuver and executing it perfectly. IF ONE OF MY LEARNERS HAD AN ISSUE, I'D CALL ED IN FOR A FLIGHT WITH THEM. IT WORKED RATHER WELL! From then on if one of my learners had an issue, I'd call Ed in for a flight with them. It worked rather well! Ed and I maintained contact for a while after I left the FBO and came to work at AOPA. I'm sorry to say that I lost touch with him prior to the pandemic but hope that he's still out there mentoring young CFIs and helping them be better at their craft. He has inspired me to do the same and I hope I've been as helpful as he was. As you might have seen earlier in this edition of CFI to CFI, this is our last issue. I have enjoyed sharing our time together in this corner of the AOPA hangar. I look forward to what lies ahead in the next chapter and hope to be able to share it with you along the way. Fly safe and I'll see you in the traffic pattern! John Collins is the AOPA Air Safety Institute's chief flight instructor and manager of aviation safety programs. Before joining ASI, John was AOPA's manager of airport policy. He earned his flight instructor certificate in 1996 and enjoys seeing students light up when they put it all together and nail a maneuver. Email: john.collins@aopa.org
