When we look at advanced dual instruction-training
flights in which the pilot under instruction already held
a recreational or higher certificate in the same aircraft
category-we find that less than 40 percent of fixed-wing
accidents took place while training for a more advanced
certificate or rating. Tailwheel instruction accounted for
a little more than 10 percent, and there were a handful

during complex or high-performance checkouts-but the largest share, some 47 percent,
occurred on flights that weren't directed toward
any formal credential. Worse, these included
more than half the fatal accidents. For all
its lethal reputation, one-third fewer deaths
occurred during multiengine instruction than
in make-and-model transition training for pilots
who already held the necessary ratings.
Transition training saw more accidents than
any other type of advanced instruction-unless
you combine flight reviews and instrument

proficiency checks with refresher training
not specifically intended to accomplish
either. Together those made up 20 percent
of all the accident flights whose purposes
could be determined, including 20 percent
of fatal accidents. Transition training ranked
just behind at about 17 percent of each. The
remaining 10 percent was a combination
of specialized techniques-aerobatics,
mountain flying, crop-dusting, etc.-and
currency flights required by government or
commercial operators.
