experience what can only be the gut-wrenching
emotion one might have when discovering the
unfaithfulness of a lover. Expecting to see the
ball deflected to the right (in a spin to the left),
much to my dismay, I see the ball sitting happily
in the center of its cage. "Aha...so, what do you
think of that?" Bill knowingly asks as we complete
our fourth full rotation. "Ridiculous," is the only
word I can summon from the mush that is now
my brain. "Good, now let's recover and do some
more," he says. I look over the nose to see the
direction of the spin, apply full opposite rudder,
move the stick forward to the neutral position,
and recover several thousand feet closer to terra
firma (and about fifty years wiser).
I was confounded by this experience, which
taught me one cannot always rely on the "ball"
to recover from a developed spin. There was so

much to learn. Was I truly ready to become a
CFI? Could I handle the responsibility?
From the first moment in flight instructor
training, you never quite see aviation the same
way again. It's humbling when the emphasis
shifts from proving how well you can fly to how
well you can teach someone else to fly. I assumed
a pretend-instructor role for the first time earlier
this summer and practiced working with an
"inexperienced (but more accurately, suicidal)
student" played unusually well by Mark Evans,
who is an experienced corporate pilot and flight
instructor for AOPA. The obvious task of taxiing
an airplane down a taxiway suddenly wasn't
so obvious. "No, Mark, you don't use the yoke
to steer the airplane on the ground." Or, "Yes,
brakes do help you turn, but let's try stepping
off the right toe brake a lot sooner so we don't

roll out in the opposite direction." Getting
used to the right seat while practicing
giving instruction for the first time made
it a relentless challenge to find the right
words to say-for example while teaching
stalls: "Pull the yoke back, now put the nose
down. The horizon-OK, now we passed
it. No, that's too much now. Bring the nose
back up; now push it a little bit more down
again." Wow, seriously? How could I, a
commercially-rated pilot, speak with such
a ham-fisted, perplexing voice? The road
ahead would be a long one, with no shortage
of hurdles.
I took my training to the next level at
Aviation Adventures, under the expert
guidance of flight school owner and awardwinning veteran CFI, Bob Hepp. Although
