178 Seconds to Live
A review of "land as soon as possible" and
"land as soon as practical" should be discussed
with any possible fire/smoke situation. With
"land as soon as possible" at the nearest
suitable airport, the primary consideration
of the safety of all occupants must be the
objective and it might include a possible offairport landing in extreme situations. "Land
as soon as practical" at a suitable airport
would be the normal procedure for approach,
before landing, and landing, and the primary
consideration is the emergency. This may
include flight to your destination airport as an
option. With most smoke and fire procedures
"land as soon as possible" would be the best
choice. Your thoughts?

We recently had two tragic accidents in one week that involved
pilot incapacitation at high altitudes. While it's impossible to say
for certain that hypoxia was the primary cause, both mishaps' flight
profiles and the reports from the military pilots who intercepted
the aircraft point toward this as a possibility.
CFIs, aside from teaching your students about the regulations (FAR
91.211) that require supplemental oxygen when flying above 10,000
msl (and 5,000 msl at night), please alert your students to the fact
that hypoxia affects the brain first-it immediately impairs judgment
making it hard to recognize you're in trouble. Note, hypoxia can
set in at different altitudes than specified in the regulations-some
pilots will need supplemental oxygen at lower altitudes. In addition,
each pilot's ability to maintain adequate oxygen levels will be
slightly different based on a variety of health and lifestyle factors,
and each pilot's physiological responses to hypoxia are unique.
