Why grateful? Like a lot of new instructors, our colleague has
structured his flying career with an eye toward maximizing

return on investment. His success has been impressive. He was ready for his
commercial checkride by the time he'd amassed the required experience, then
transferred that training to the opposite seat so efficiently that he earned his
instructor's certificate with just 10 more hours of flight time. Taking on his own
students finally enabled him to start flying at somebody else's expense. Still, he's not
yet what most of us would call a high-timer. By the day of that double-I ride he'd
accrued about 400 hours, including around 80 of dual given and perhaps 70 hours
of instrument time. No more than 10 were in actual IMC.
That's not unusual; in fact, it's the logical result of the typical career progression.
Going from one's own instrument training to learning VFR commercial maneuvers
to teaching primary students in VMC doesn't leave a lot of time to bore through
clouds. When we asked, other now-seasoned CFIIs admitted to having as little
as five hours' actual instrument time when they tested for that rating. (One also
commented that a subsequent job flying charters in real weather had done wonders
