FINAL EXAM ANSWERS
Continued from page 19 1. The correct answer is B. Unless otherwise directed by air traffic control the transponder should be set to 1200 once radar service has been terminated. ATC expects the aircraft to operate VFR, and therefore set 1200 in the transponder. 2. The correct answer is C. If an aircraft receives a flashing white light while taxiing, the aircraft should return to the starting point. There’s no light signal for taxiing faster or crossing taxiways and not runways. Flashing red, however, is used to instruct pilots to taxi clear of the runway in use. 3. The correct answer is A. The majority of piston aircraft are equipped with a dual ignition system. This system provides increased performance through dual magnetos and two spark plugs per cylinder, which allows for the fuel mixture to burn more evenly. A dual ignition system also increases safety because of its inherent redundancy. 4. The correct answer is A. When landing behind a large aircraft the flight path should remain above the previous aircraft, as its vortices will sink. Once the preceding aircraft has landed and is no longer producing lift, the vortices will no longer be produced. Answer B is incorrect because vortices sink, meaning you should not be below the flight path or behind the touchdown point. Answer C is incorrect because vortices may still be produced behind the touchdown point. 5. The correct answer is A. The recommended procedure for collision avoidance when climbing or descending on an airway is to execute gentle turns left and right when operating under VFR. Answer B is incorrect because flight service does not control aircraft movement. Answer C is incorrect because simply flying off the centerline of the airway won’t ensure collision avoidance. 6. The correct answer is B. Selecting carburetor heat allows warmer air to enter the carburetor, which is not as dense as cold air. This decrease in air density causes the fuel/air mixture to become richer. Answer A is incorrect because although rpm will drop, it is because of a rich mixture, not a lean mixture. Answer C is incorrect because the fuel/air mixture becomes richer, not leaner. 7. The correct answer is A. Flying at VY will provide the greatest gain in altitude over a given time frame. Answer B is incorrect because VX will result in the greatest gain of altitude in the shortest distance. Answer C is incorrect because it is maneuvering speed, which deals with aircraft structural integrity, not climb performance. 8. The correct answer is B. In order to carry passengers when acting as pilot in command of an aircraft at night (the time between the end of evening civil twilight and the beginning of morning civil twilight as published by the American Air Almanac [FAR1.1]), three takeoffs and landings must have been made at night within the preceding 90 days, in an aircraft of the same category and class. Answer A is incorrect because the period of sunset to sunrise is when mandatory lighting must be used. Answer C is incorrect because it gives the definition of night, not when pilot currency must be achieved.
