FINAL EXAM ANSWERS
Continued from page 19 1. The correct answer is B. An emergency locator transmitter (ELT) will transmit on both 121.5 and 243.0 MHz. Civilian radios can receive 121.5 MHz signals, while military radios can receive 243 MHz. Some ELTs transmit on 406 MHz and 121.5 and many have the option to encode the aircraft's position into the signal to allow for improved search and rescue operations. (AIM Chapter 6-2-5) 2. The correct answer is B. Errors associated with acceleration and deceleration do not occur when on a north or south heading in the Northern Hemisphere. The errors occur on east and west headings. Although answer A is correct when on an east or west heading, it’s incorrect when on a north or south heading. Answer C is incorrect because it only occurs during deceleration. (Pilot’s Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge Chapter 7) 3. The correct answer is B. The amount of thrust produced is related to the amount of air being displaced by the rotating propeller. A higher density altitude means the air is less dense so the propeller efficiency will be less. Answer A is incorrect because although friction is less, so is efficiency. Answer C is incorrect because there is decreased force of the propeller, not increased. (Pilot’s Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge Chapter 3) 4. The correct answer is C. Land and hold short operations (LAHSO) take place at some airports with air traffic control towers. The pilot in command has the final authority as to whether or not he or she wishes to accept a LAHSO clearance. If for any reason safety may be of concern the pilot should decline the clearance. Answer A is incorrect because pilots are allowed to decline a LAHSO clearance. Answer B is incorrect because the tower cannot force you to accept a LAHSO clearance. (AIM Chapter 4-3-11) 5. The correct answer is B. When landing with a tailwind the groundspeed will be higher, which causes the ground roll to be longer. The increased groundspeed on approach may cause one to overshoot the intended point of landing as well. Answer A is incorrect because the airspeed may not be higher, and control is usually worse. Answer C is incorrect because the ground roll will always be longer. (Pilot’s Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge Chapter 10) 6. The correct answer is C. Departing VFR aircraft are requested to inform ground control on initial contact of their intended direction of departure and if they are requesting radar traffic information. Answer A is technically incorrect per the AIM, but certain ATC facilities at larger airports may ask pilots to make the initial request through clearance delivery. Answer B is incorrect because pilots should never request radar service from the tower. (AIM Chapter 4-1-18) 7. The correct answer is C. If just the pitot tube is blocked, only the airspeed indicator will be inoperative. Ram pressure from the pitot tube is directed directly to the airspeed indicator. Answers A and B are incorrect because they utilize only the static system. (Pilot’s Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge Chapter 7) 8. The correct answer is C. Aviation fuel weighs six pounds per gallon; 15 gallons must be removed to ensure the aircraft is not over the allowed limits. (Pilot’s Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge Chapter 8)
