A word of caution: If you happen to miscalculate and blow
through the final, go around if you can’t correct with a simple,
prompt adjustment. Low altitude is no place for excessive
maneuvering.
If you “run out of rudder” or aileron and can’t maintain
longitudinal alignment or drift correction during a crosswind
approach, discontinue it; now you know your limit. After flying,
get out your flight computer and calculate the crosswind component that existed at the time. Keep a record of the crosswinds
you have experienced in your logbook or a journal.
To fine-tune individual elements of the technique, you and
your instructor can take advantage of sufficiently long runways
by flying above the runway centerline in ground effect without
touching down to get the hang of controlling drift with bank and
keeping the nose pointed down the runway with opposite rudder
pressure. (There’s nothing like investigating a technique’s individual elements at length for imparting technical understanding
and proficiency.)
Here’s a guiding idea for your pilot training: There’s no such
thing as too much crosswind landing practice. Consider that
even highly experienced pilots who are out of practice will benefit greatly from a brisk session of getting the wheels down in the
proper order. For a flight instructor administering a flight review,
a rental checkout, or some other refresher, a good crosswind is
the best tool in the toolbox.
