INTERCEPT PROCEDURES

What to do when they come for you

You're trundling along on a daytime cross-country flight. Your course line takes you close to
Prohibited Area P-40 over Thurmont, Maryland, but you've got a GPS on board. Its database
is a little out of date-OK, a lot out of date. A sectional chart is tossed in the backseat, but
not out and viewable. You didn't call Flight Service to get a preflight briefing, because the
weather is severe clear. And you're not monitoring 121.5 because you simply forgot to load
that frequency.
Hey, what's this? A fighter jet has swung up to your left; another is behind you.
If you haven't already figured it out, you've been intercepted. In spite of what
you thought was sufficient flight planning, you flew into the prohibited area,
which was expanded to a 10-nautical-mile radius under a temporary flight
restriction. Its larger dimensions are depicted on your sectional-which
you were not viewing-but not shown on your GPS,

'BUT I DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT
THAT TFR!'

An inadvertent violation of a TFR usually is the result of insufficient flight planning. You can sift through a notice to airmen,
but here are some other resources:

SPECIAL FLIGHT RULES AREA

Any pilot who flies under VFR within a 60-nautical-mile radius
of the DCA VOR/DME must complete the FAA's online training
course, found on its website (https://faasafety.gov/gslac/ALC/
course_content.aspx?cID=55&sID=314&preview=true). Once
completed, print the course certificate and keep it. FAR 91.161
doesn't specify that you need to carry it with you, but it does
say you need to present it for inspection upon request from
the FAA, NTSB, TSA, or law enforcement.

PHASE ONE: APPROACH
A fighter jet or helicopter may approach from the left. If there are
two aircraft, the other will position itself behind you.
WHAT YOU SHOULD DO
Remain calm; fly the airplane. Maintain a constant altitude,
heading, and airspeed. The intercepting aircraft is responsible for
providing safe separation. Acknowledge the intercepting aircraft
with a wing rock.
