The two maps on the left side show the
expected weather up to 12 hours from
the time the data used for the forecast
was collected. The two maps on the right
side are for 24 hours ahead. Meteorologists call this time the "valid time," which
is abbreviated as "VT" on all NWS forecast maps.
Gold lines do not surround an area
where thunderstorms are forecast, since
you should always assume that all thunderstorms contain severe turbulence.
Instrument flight rules conditions are
forecast for areas inside red circles, such
as those along the California coast and in
the upper Midwest.
The blue wavy lines surround areas
where forecasters expect marginal VFR
weather. The darker blue wavy line running from around Green Bay, Wisconsin,
across the Plains and north across
western Montana into Canada, shows
where the freezing level should be at the
surface.
Dashed blue lines running generally east to west with numbers on them
give the altitude of the freezing line.
For example, the "120" on the line over
Texas shows that the freezing level
there should be 12,000 feet above mean
sea level along the line, lower to the
north.
FILLING IN THE MAP PICTURE. In addition to the significant weather prog
charts, you should check out the area
WHAT'S HAPPENING ON THE GROUND.
When you look at Figure 2, which is the
forecast for 12 hours ahead, you see that
country's main weather feature is a system
of fronts and two low-pressure centers on
the central and northern Plains.
Precipitation is forecast to be reaching the ground in areas outlined in green.
Moderate snow is forecast in areas
marked with ** and *** means heavy
snow. Two dots, such as those shown in
western Nebraska, show moderate rain
is forecast. A triangle with a dot above it,
such as the one on the Kansas-Nebraska
border, shows that thunderstorms are
forecast there. A legend at the bottom of
four-panel charts identifies the symbols.
THE FORECAST ALOFT. Figure 3, which
is the upper left image on the four-panel
map, is the 24-hour forecast above the
ground up to 24,000 feet.
The dashed gold lines covering large
areas over the Rockies, the Plains, and
Northeast show where moderate or
stronger turbulence is forecast. The
upside-down "V" over Oklahoma with
"080" under it indicates that the turbulence is below 8,000 feet.
