WOLVINGTON

ONE OF BOEING'S VERY BEST
For a person who came late to aviation-he
didn't learn to ﬂy until his mid-50s-Howard Wolvington hasn't wasted any time. An
independent ﬂight instructor who is the FAA
2014 CFI of the Year, Wolvington learned
to ﬂy while working for The Boeing Co.,
and became president and operations
officer of the Boeing Employees Flying Association (BEFA) in Renton,
Washington. He retired from Boeing in 2000 and began a second
career as a full-time CFI. He still
works extensively with BEFA
and also instructs in the Seattle
area, specializing in technically
advanced aircraft.

STARTED IN AVIATION...I actually
wanted something to do with my
son. He was a young man of about
10, and I was looking for father-son
activities-that turned out to be
radio-controlled airplanes. In high
school, he got his glider certiﬁcate
and [eventually] became a ﬂight
instructor.
LEARNING LATER IN LIFE...After
my kids both got through college, I
wanted to learn to ﬂy. Most of the
challenges were ﬁnding the time
and ﬁnancial resources with other
things going on.
FAVORITE AIRPLANE... My Piper
Comanche is near to my heart.
It's not as capable as many of the
airplanes I ﬂy, such as the Piper
Malibu [even though] it's a very
nice airplane.
ADVICE FOR STUDENTS... The main
thing is to ﬂy as much as you can
as quickly as you can. Those who
can only ﬂy once a week take a lot
longer than the folks who ﬂy two or
three times a week.
