There are five military service academies in the United States that prepare students for military careers. Graduates receive a bachelor's degree and a commission as an officer in that branch of the military. Most require a nomination from a member of Congress (except the U.S. Coast Guard Academy) and the tuition is covered by the branch of the military with commitment to service after graduation, usually a minimum of five years on active duty. Entrance is highly competitive.
