on flying professionally. I was ready to take my CFI checkride, and then
9/11 happened. All flying was stopped, including checkrides. My job
prospects went from fantastic to terrible overnight. I was lucky to get
a job instructing, but the flying was slow, the future bleak, and I was
bored. I enjoyed instructing, but there were too many of us for too few
students. I spent a lot more time sitting around than actually teaching.
So, I checked out AOPA and was given the opportunity to combine a
passion for aviation with a stable career. Unforeseen consequences can
sometimes turn into wonderful opportunities. "
ELIZABETH TENNYSON, AOPA Foundation senior vice
president: " As I was nearing the end of my private pilot training,
a colleague and fellow pilot told me about an opening in AOPA's
publications department. They were looking for someone with magazine
management experience. 'I'm not qualified for the job, but you are,' he
said. I applied, got the job, and never looked back. Being a brand-new
pilot, jazzed on the fun and adventure of flying, and having the chance
to work with an amazing cadre of masterful pilots, fly different kinds of
aircraft, and write about what I loved-it didn't get better than that. And
I can honestly say that after more than 20 years with AOPA in a wide
variety of roles, I've never been bored at work. "
JON GANDY, AOPA aviation technical specialist: " My love of
aviation definitely came first. I used to live under the final approach for
one of the runways at Andrews Air Force Base. We used to climb on the
roof to watch the Blue Angels practice and do their show every year.
My mom's job required travel, which we were able to turn into family
vacations. I always ended up with a seat just behind the wing where I
could watch speed brakes, reversers, ailerons, and flaps all working. And
one of the biggest things were the captains who would invite me into the
cockpit. I did my multiengine commercial instrument add-on the week
before the September 11 attacks, which led to a decade-long break from
flying for me. I bounced around in many different customer service and
sales positions. Now, here I am working in the AOPA Pilot Information
Center, answering calls and helping members with their various concerns. "
