want to take him to task for not doing his homework.
He discussed the American Airlines flight that refused to land on Runway 22R at
JFK and declared an emergency in order to land on Runway 31R. So far, so good. But
he said that the pilot broke off the approach " for an unknown reason. " If he listened to
the whole conversation, he would have heard the tower announce the winds were " 320
at 23, gusting 35. " If he calculated the headwind/crosswind components for Runway
22 and Runway 31, he would have had a very good idea of why the pilot refused to land
on Runway 22. (I have not been able to find any explanation of why, with two parallel
runways pointed into the wind, JFK was landing airplanes with those crosswinds.) He
would have also heard the pilot mention that he was low on fuel.
So, instead of making the pilot seem to be some selfish jerk who just wanted things
his own way, he could have made the point that the pilot was faced with a situation in
which the instructions from the controller would have created a safety of flight issue
and did absolutely the right thing by insisting on doing not just what he wanted, but
what he needed to do.
It helps to remember The First Principle: When pilots make mistakes, pilots die-
when controllers make mistakes, pilots die.
As for his conclusion, that if a pilot has any doubts about being able to comply with
a clearance or other ATC instruction, the correct response of " unable " is spot on, but it
was not necessary to throw shade on the American Airlines pilot to do so. Keep up the
good work.

After rFLYING SOLO
eading Sarah Deener's editorial, " Flying Solo, " in the June edition of Flight
Training, I wanted to drop her a note. It was nice to read that she also had those
moments of CFI-induced change in how she flew. My instructor is a 50-year veteran
who has flown just about everything with wings. With him on my right, I realized I was
often complacent, and I occasionally lacked the reasonable caution that a new pilot
should have. I was unafraid of anything that airplane might do. As a result, I'm trying to
spend less time in lessons and more time solo, just to make sure this feeling of complacency
does not become habit.
