Parallel holding entries

I ONCE GOT A CALL from a member who
was working on his instrument rating
and had a question about parallel holding entries. He wanted to know why the
FAA would create a procedure that would
intentionally have you fly in the "unprotected area" of the holding pattern.
Have you ever heard a pilot refer to
one side of the inbound leg of the hold
as the "protected side" and the opposite side of the leg as the "unprotected
side"? I know I have, and it's pretty
common, but there is no such thing as
an "unprotected" side.
Chapter 17 of FAA Order 8260.3D,
United States Standard for Terminal
Instrument Procedures-commonly
known as TERPS-gives guidance
for establishing holding patterns, and
there is no mention of the dreaded
"unprotected" side anywhere. There
are, in fact, many references to a
"protected area," a block of airspace
that encompasses what is commonly
referred to as the "protected" and
"unprotected" sides.
If that is the case, then what terminology does the FAA use for each side
of the inbound leg? Officially they are
referred to as the "holding side" and
"nonholding side," which sounds less
ominous than the dreaded "unprotected
side"-especially to new instrument students. So next time, when you're at the
airport hangar flying, you can help spread
the truth about the imaginary "unprotected side" and maybe an IFR student
will sleep a little better that night.
