involve much smaller companies. "These are our friends that were
involved in this in our company," Chupp said. "So just to imply 'Okay,
we're done and it's time to go flying again' is not sufficient."
He said companies should give employees "permission" to talk about
their experience, express concerns, and get those remedied before
going back to work.
Accidents to Pandemics
When asked about the applicability of an emergency response
program to something like the COVID-19 pandemic, Chupp said that a
good program "transcends" the specifics of the scenario. The specific,
bulleted procedures a company follows will be different in a contagion
event than in an accident, but the basic model is the same.
"What I mean to say is that you still have to do the same things.
You have to have awareness, confirm it's you and get a sense of
magnitude," he said.
Training, Deviations, and
Alternates on an Oceanic Scale
COVID-19 has changed your options, and
you definitely need to know before you go

It used to be that most pilots needed to matriculate
with the airlines before they found themselves flying
internationally across the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, and
Southern Oceans. Airline schedule cuts and traveler
anxiety over the pandemic have led to more and more
charter requests for oceanic operations. Is your flight
department ready?

A customer in the back of the plane begins coughing, there's almost
an over-response and it turns out the person had pretzel crumbs in
their throat, Chupp said, adding "it's a true story." In the COVID-19
environment "you need to get your fact set substantiated, determine
what you have, and then take care of those affected." Companies need to
communicate with their employees to control rumors and stress and the
perception element of a program can help. They also have to be ready to
communicate if word of a contagion related event finds its way into social
space, he said. And then it's about getting back to work again.
Also, with COVID, companies will need to participate with new
players, such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and
the public health departments of the states or countries in which
they are operating. "It's the same sort of thing. Get good advice.
Don't just cooperate. Think more broadly and participate effectively
in those activities."
A) VFR
B) Depends on the approaches available at the
alternate airport.
C) Better than the weather at your destination
by a factor of 2.

With a dearth of airline flights overseas Fortune
100 companies that need to move people around
the world have turned to general aviation charter
operations to fulfill their needs. What kind of
training requirements are necessary for GA pilots
who need to fly oceanic operations?
A) Complete an operator's oceanic operations
training program.
B) Provide evidence of prior experience or military
training records indicating prior oceanic
operations experience.
C) Document study of oceanic risk mitigations.
D) Any one or all of the above.
Practice and Training
Regardless of the scenario, training or practicing the emergency
response program is crucial. "In times of emergency you are going to
need to have some degree of confidence that [you] have a playbook
and have walked through this before," Chupp said.
"I would consider it to be vital that it's practiced and rehearsed,
and folks have a chance to get familiar with the program and gain
confidence that the program will help them," he said. "I can't imagine
how an organization can successfully contend with a fast-moving
emergency situation without a degree of practice. I just can't imagine
how that would be done effectively."
You're en route to your destination, you listen to
ATIS and the airport is below minimums for every
approach. You divert to your alternate, which has
an ILS approach. What minimums must exist to fly
the approach at your alternate?

Where can a GA operator find the most current
information about Oceanic operations and viable
alternates, along with international COVID-19
irregularities and current commentary from
operators in the field?
A) Use the ASTN network that links NOTAM
services worldwide.
B) The only reliable information comes from hiring a
handler in the field to do all of your international flight
planning and arrival handling; so you don't need to.
C) Subscribe to Ops.Group for real-time
crowdsourced information.
