IT IS EASY TO BE OVERWHELMED WHEN INITIALLY
CONSIDERING A SAFETY MANAGEMENT
SYSTEM (SMS). I had the same experience
years ago when operating a flight training
organization with a very thin staff. Wading
through the complicated structure and
reporting requirements can make SMS
initially unattractive.
Every entrepreneur must approach any new
initiative with an eye toward the benefits, " How
will all this pay me back? " So let me assure you,
the benefits make some initial confusion and
struggle very worth it. As the old saw goes, " If
you think safety is expensive, try dealing with
an accident! "
If implemented correctly, your
organization will become more
honest and happier as the new
program is rolled out and fully
implemented. The core of SMS
is understanding, embracing,
and communicating the safety
culture paradigm.
Safety is an essential pursuit in itself. Put

When implemented appropriately, SMS can
(and should) start simply and grow naturally in
an organization. But the first step is probably
the most critical: selling this primary safety
focus to the entire company. SMS requires a
fundamental culture change throughout an
organization, an all-hands-on-deck approach.
It is also essential to keep the safety mission
in focus during the initial transformation and
establish this as a new way of doing business.
SMS is not an add-on or a " greenwashing " kind
of patina; it requires a deep and enduring
change in how an operation views its mission
and conducts business. It necessitates broadly
sharing (previously hidden) experiences
throughout the organization to create greater
daily safety.
If implemented correctly, your organization
will become more honest and happier
as the new program is rolled out and
fully implemented. The core of SMS is
understanding, embracing, and communicating
the safety culture paradigm. Everything builds
generatively from this essential commitment to
