of an honest safety culture. After education,
the next crucial first indicator of progress is
the quantity of unsolicited safety reports your
system begins receiving. Obviously, the goal is
a vigorous and active communication of safety
issues. But you are not initially likely to be
overwhelmed with reports. Significant change
takes time to develop honest and comfortable
communication. These changes may initially be
uncomfortable in a traditional workplace. As
your associates explore and inhabit their new
roles as safety advocates, reporting will increase.
And once the process is underway, expanding
the depth and breadth of your data system is
only a scaling problem.
An overly complicated initial SMS
structure will likely create more
resistance than cooperation in
your organization.
It is possible, of course, that a lack of reporting
could also reveal a software problem. Is there
a problem with access or convenience? Is there
still a fear of reprisal? As the process grows, it
is essential to scale the system but also continue
the education. New hires need to be onboarded
with a clear explanation of your core values of
safety reporting. An important part of every
SMS is auditing the process through surveys.
This can also involve just walking around and
asking. Management must encourage and model
a no-fault attitude toward errors.
In my daily flying, we still often use FLTplan.
com to plan and file our flights. Garmin now
owns this interface and provides an SMS
platform as an add-on. This would be easily
accessible if your pilots are also using this
software. The wildly popular ForeFlight has
a method to push notifications downstream
on their app with the " documents utility. "
SMS Pro has many free ideas on its site. The
SMS products from ARGUS PRISM and Polaris
Aero available through USAIG's Performance
Vector program offer many features. The
flying club I once ran had a very functional
SMS attached to the airplane scheduler. Again,
I would encourage a bare-bones start with
incremental scaling as the popularity expands.
