MUCH OF THE MEASURING and testing takes place apart from the airplane. Here, a proportionally accurate, 3-D-printed Legacy fuselage (left) is sculpted with modeling clay to determine the optimum shape for the real aircraft. Andrew Findlay holds one of the comically short and wide aluminum propeller blades (below), which is fitted with dynamic sensors that measure whether the prop can withstand the punishing forces of a boosted engine, high speed, and high rpm. The data gleaned from these experiments is likely to be applied to future McCauley Propeller commercial products. aopa.org/pilot AOPA PILOT | 53http://www.aopa.org/pilot
