To keep the math simple, let's say the
handling fee is $100 and the fuel required
to waive the fee is 100 gallons. If the next
available fuel is priced at $5 per gallon
and the higher price fuel where you are is
$7, pay the fee. You'll be out the hundred
bucks for the fee but it would have cost
$200 more to buy the 100 gallons of fuel.
You're $100 ahead.
Of course, you must know the true
cost of the available fuel ahead to work
the math. And that may be more difficult
than it appears because of how fuel prices
are posted. The trap is an FBO not including
all taxes and fees in its reported price.
Those costs added to the posted base
price of the fuel can easily blow up your
calculation. And you must know those
total costs at the high price FBO and the
cost at the fuel source coming up for the
calculation to work.
Tankering considerations
Deciding not to buy fuel means you will
be tankering fuel to get to the lower
price. The vast improvement in jet engine
efficiency over the past several decades-
plus considerable gains in aerodynamic
efficiency-makes it possible for most jets
to tanker fuel not needed for a particular
leg thus making the fuel buying decision
more complicated.
Even a light jet such as the Cessna
Citation CJ4 Gen2 that I fly has five hours
of fuel endurance, and the larger business
jets have much more capacity. Often
we could fly our typical trips, even up to
three or sometimes four legs total, without
buying fuel at any stop. But tankering
that extra fuel is not free.
The most obvious cost of tankering
fuel is the extra unnecessary weight.
More weight cuts into fuel efficiency and
also does bad things to runway performance.
There's usually plenty of margin
at most airports not to worry about having
enough takeoff runway. But if it's a hot day,
or you're at an airport with higher elevation,
required takeoff runway length can
become an issue at higher weights.
The extra weight of tankered fuel
extends time to climb meaning the airplane
burns more fuel on the way up to
an efficient altitude. And, depending on air

For example, several times a year our
AOPA's Airport Directory lists detailed
fee information at participating FBOs
to help pilots make informed decisions
about where to stop. The fees are
categorized into 36 types, including
ramp, hangar, landing, and overnight
fees as well as less common ones such
as camping or towing.

temperature, you may not even be able to
climb to the optimum altitude for your
trip because of the extra weight. So there
goes more fuel out the pipes.
Landing with tankered fuel can
quickly become a limitation. For us, being
under maximum landing weight is the
first consideration to be made when fueling
for an initial short trip leg.
Tankered fuel landings also reduce
safety margins at least a little because
your approach speeds will be higher than
necessary. That means you need more
stopping distance, and if the runway is
contaminated, or the wind is gusting a lot,
margins are cut. There are also the small,
but not insignificant costs, of wear on tires
and brakes caused by higher approach
speeds of a heavier landing weight.
Paying for service
Finally, I believe we must include the
price of FBO services when deciding
where to buy fuel. We need good
FBOs or our airplanes are worthless.
And this becomes more apparent, and
more crucial, when flying passengers on
purposeful trips instead of flying only
ourselves on our own business.
Of course, a comfortable FBO lounge,
clean restrooms and other amenities are
essential for your passengers. And all the
FBOs at the more popular metropolitan
airports-where fuel prices are generally
higher-have that. But if you think about
using less busy airports in more rural
areas where fuel prices may be lower,
the absence of those amenities and other
issues may become limiting.
people need to visit a supplier, or a customer,
who may be located away from a
significant city. We look on the map apps,
compare driving distance from the closest
airport with suitable runway length
and instrument approaches, and begin to
investigate landing there.
The first issue is operating hours.
Small airports often don't have enough
business to staff the one and only FBO on
the field for the early or later hours passengers
often need.
The next big issue to check is ground
transportation. Sparse population density
makes shared driving services unworkable,
so that's not usually a solution. Rental cars
may be available, but most often the cars
can't be left for pickup and return to the
small airport. That means the rental people
must drive to the airport, take the passengers
back to an office, and then send them
on their way. And the rental company
hours are almost certainly restricted.
And, selfishly as a crew member, I
think about how many smaller airports
lack the crew lounge and other amenities
that make a day of waiting for your passengers
reasonably comfortable. Not to
mention an available crew car for lunch.
So what typically happens is we end up
flying our passengers to the closest airport
with a full service FBO and they spend a
few more minutes driving the rental car
that is waiting for them on the ramp. All
these services come at a cost. And the financial
lifeline of any FBO is fuel sales. Who
pays? We do, the people who use our turbine
airplanes for efficient and purposeful
transportation. Many pilots call it " courtesy
fuel " to buy jet A when it's not really necessary.
I can't defend the fuel price gouging
that is too common at some FBOs, but I do
know we need to pay our fair share to keep
them open and operating.
Complete fuel cost planning? I think
it's too complex and variable for a computer
program to solve. But we pilots
can, and must, weigh the variables
beyond just dollars and cents at each
stop.
