Looking Forward to 2011 with ASPS By Tiffany Kildale, ASPS Manager T he end of 2010 saw a blur of activity for the American Society of Podiatric Surgeons (ASPS). We held our Board of Directors meeting; we sent representatives to the American Association of Colleges of Podiatric Medicine’s Balance Meeting, APMA’s Board of Trustees meeting, and the Council of Teaching Hospitals meeting; and we received CPME approval as a continuing education sponsor—and all that activity was just in October! With so much year-end activity, we are looking forward to a productive 2011. ASPS has planned some exciting activities and initiatives for the upcoming year that we’re eager to share with the podiatric community. ASPS recently launched its 2011 Lecture Series at the Science and Management Meeting in Orlando. On Thursday, January 20, Mickey Stapp, DPM, and Allen Jacobs, DPM, presented the ASPS four-hour lecture track on adult flatfoot reconstruction. Topics such as biomechanical evaluation of the symptomatic flatfoot, the role of biologics in adult flatfoot surgery, and conservative care of the symptomatic flatfoot were covered. The ASPS Lecture Series also is scheduled to be presented at the APMA Region 3 annual meeting in May in Atlantic City, N.J., and APMA’s Region 7 annual meeting in November. We’re again honored to host our lecture track at the APMA Annual Scientific Meeting (The National) in Boston in July, where we also will offer Surgical Cadaver Labs. ASPS also looks forward to the 2011 ASPS Spring Surgical Seminar. It’s a one-day meeting that will be held on March 2 at the Hyatt Regency Chicago—the same venue hosting this year’s Midwest Podiatry Conference. The seminar will include half-day lectures followed by half-day workshops, providing attendees with the opportunity to earn up to eight continuing education credit hours. ASPS’ adult flatfoot reconstruction lectures will be given during the morning. Seminar participants will be able to attend all the presentations covered under this track. The lectures will be followed by and tied into the flatfoot reconstruction workshops, allowing seminar attendees to employ the skills they just learned. ASPS strives to keep costs reasonable, whether for ASPS membership and access to our online ASPS University or for registration for any of our surgical training seminars. We’re pleased to announce that the registration fees for the 2011 ASPS Spring Surgical Seminar are $100 for ASPS members and $350 for nonmembers. Nonmembers who register for the seminar will receive complimentary ASPS membership for the remainder of the 2010–2011 membership year, allowing them access to 20 ASPS University. ASPS membership is always complimentary for residents and students, and we strongly encourage them to attend our seminars. Following the trend of complimentary membership for residents and students, the ASPS Membership Committee recently revised application requirements for our affiliate membership category to include newly licensed practitioners. The ASPS Membership Committee recently included new practitioners in this category by allowing them to submit 10 resident first-assist cases accompanied by a signed statement of verification from the program director in place of the 10 notarized operative reports. We hope to continue working this trend into other facets of the organization. Our last article in APMA News, “The Growth and Success of ASPS: A Year in Review,” reflected on all the changes that occurred in the organization leading up to and immediately following The National 2010 in Seattle. ASPS looks forward to providing ASPS members and other podiatrists with surgical education opportunities in 2011.
