CPME Self-study: Professional Development and Advocacy
The Council on Podiatric Medical Education plans a self-study this spring in order to ensure its requirements and review processes meet or exceed professional standards. The actions, standards, and procedures of the council are bound by the overriding philosophy of accreditation— a voluntary process of self-study, peer review, and improvement. The council takes its role in shaping the future of the profession very seriously—this responsibility is truly its core principle. The council continuously seeks to promote and protect the podiatric medical profession by ensuring the highest quality possible in postdoctoral education, graduate medical education, board certification, and continuing education. By confirming that these programs meet established standards and requirements, the council serves to protect the professional integrity and recognition of podiatric medical students and doctors of podiatric medicine before the public, all levels of government, and other medical organizations. The self-study will allow the council to “practice what it preaches” in the area of self-evaluation. The merits of self-study have long been recognized in the fields of education and business to provide direction in the management and improvement of organizational systems. The council requires colleges of podiatric medicine to conduct self-studies prior to each comprehensive accreditation review and requires residency and fellowship programs and sponsors of continuing education to conduct yearly self-assessments. Self-study contributes in significant ways to identifying problem areas, establishing new goals and objectives, and directing the pursuit of improved methods for achieving these goals and objectives. The council engages in periodic selfstudy as a formal means to obtain input

from its community of interest and to enable strategic planning that takes into account the needs of the council and the community of interest. The council believes a good self-study calls for the collection of information from its community of interest within the profession about the effectiveness of

council processes and the relevance of the criteria used in evaluating educational programs. In January, the council circulated surveys to various constituents of its community of interest. The following 11 groups were selected for the survey, encompassing a potential respondent population of 730 individuals:
After the data are compiled, council members and staff will discuss the results during their April 2011 meeting. If you received a survey but have not yet responded, please do so as soon as possible. Responses to previous self-study surveys have assisted the council in making significant changes to its operations.
1987 Self-study
The council elected to reorganize itself and revise its committee purposes and structure. Consequently, representation on the council and its committees was expanded to enable greater opportunities for representatives of the CPME community of interest to participate in the council’s evaluation processes. This expansion also facilitated an increase in diversity within the membership of the council and its committees. Membership diversity was (and remains) a serious concern for the US Department of Education, which recognizes the council as the accrediting agency for podiatric medicine. The organizational changes instituted in 1989 resulting from the 1987 self-study continue to be reflected in the council’s operations.
