Technofile App Happy In last month’s installment of Technofile, we shared advice on choosing the smartphone that’s right for you. In this month’s edition, we take a look at mobile apps designed for today’s podiatrist. Mobile applications, or “apps,” are big business. Think of them as a way to make your smartphone smarter. Just as you download software to your computer, you can download an app to your phone to enhance its capabilities. There are apps that allow you to access e-mail; apps for music, games, and restaurant reservations; apps that turn your phone into a flashlight or a mirror; even apps that provide diagnostic references for physicians. Some apps are free for download, while others can be relatively expensive. APMA will offer members an app that connects them with the 2011 Annual Scientific Meeting (The National) this July. Attendees in Boston and members who can’t make it to The National will be able to use their smartphones to access the latest news, an online session guide, a digital exhibit hall map, and more. Attendees can use the app to build their own itineraries and download their schedule to their calendars. Users also will be able to share news articles via Twitter, Facebook, Delicious, and other social networking sites. The National app will be available for iPhone, BlackBerry, Android, and other smartphone platforms. To be among the first to download the app, text APMA Mobile to shortcode 80802. In other app news, APMA member Alec Hochstein, DPM, recently launched an app by a podiatrist for podiatrists. iPodiatrist includes podiatry-related videos, high-quality anatomy photos, a list of the top 50 podiatric medical conditions, and a variety of information from the leaders in podiatric medicine (including APMA). Podiatrists enjoy easy mobile access to the informational resources he has built into the app, Dr. Hochstein said. But the app has value for other audiences, Dr. Hochstein believes. He developed the app with ambitious goals and envisions it being used in patient encounters, with students, and to educate the public. “I practice in New York, but through this app, I can influence a patient in Arizona who will go see a podiatrist in Arizona,” Dr. Hochstein said. “iPodiatrist demystifies podiatry. It really has far-reaching value.” He already has referred patients to podiatrists across the country based on patient messages he received through the app. Dr. Hochstein plans to continue to update iPodiatrist with new functionality, including a mobile database of podiatrists accessible to patients. He encourages podiatrists to contact him through the app if they are interested in being included in the database. He also recommends participating in the blog portal by contributing comments, suggestions, and practice tips. Dr. Hochstein believes podiatric medicine should take the lead in incorporating mobile applications and other forms of social media into the practice of medicine. “Social media is going to be a game changer for medicine,” he said. “We’ve led on so many other fronts; why not here?
