Worthy of Note IPMA Welcomes New Executive Director The Illinois Podiatric Medical Association (IPMA) has named Michael Hriljac, DPM, as its new executive director. He replaces Mary Feeley, who served as executive director for 16 years. Dr. Hriljac has a master’s degree in health law from Loyola University Chicago School of Law and a law degree from John Marshall Law Michael Hriljac, DPM School in Chicago. He graduated from the Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine in 1979 after receiving his bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Illinois at Chicago. In 1979, Dr. Hriljac founded Ridgeland Podiatry Center, Ltd., in Berwyn, IL, and ran that practice until 1999, when he left to pursue his law degree. He is a past president of IPMA and served a number of years as an APMA delegate. Dr. Hriljac served as chief of podiatric surgery at Oak Park Hospital, Oak Park, IL, and MacNeal Hospital, Berwyn, IL. He also chaired the Podiatric Licensing Section for the Illinois Department of Professional Regulation. He is a trustee at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science and Rosalind Franklin University Health System and has served on numerous professional and other not-for-profit boards. “His combined experiences in podiatric medicine, health law, and legal matters will serve us well,” said Marlene Reid, DPM, president of IPMA. n CTPMA Honors Eric Kosofsky, DPM The Connecticut Podiatric Medical Association named Eric M. Kosofsky, DPM, its 2011 Podiatrist of the Year. Dr. Kosofsky serves as section chief of the Department of Podiatric Surgery at Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center and is an assistant professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. APMA Member Lectures at NKF Seminar APMA member K. Kyle Ballew, DPM, had a recent opportunity to educate allopathic colleagues and advanced nurse practitioners at the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) Annual Seminar in Las Vegas. K. Kyle Ballew, DPM, presents the Dr. Ballew presented Thomson Reuters study results. on the diabetic foot and introduced the results of the APMA-sponsored Thomson Reuters study on the cost-effectiveness of care by a podiatrist for patients with diabetes. Dr. Ballew reported the lecture was well received, and he has been invited to lecture at next year’s seminar in Washington. “We appreciate Dr. Ballew’s efforts to reach out to the medical community with positive messages about the important role podiatrists play in health-care delivery,” said APMA Executive Director and CEO Glenn B. Gastwirth, DPM. n Undergrad Receives National Award for Wound Care Research Ersilia Anghel, a University of Arizona student, received the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education award, a major national student award, for 2011–12. Anghel conducts translational research on the use of nanoparticles to improve wound healing in patients with diabetes. She collaborates with David Armstrong, DPM, MD, PhD, at the Southern Arizona Limb Salvage Alliance at the University of Arizona Medical Center. Dr. Armstrong congratulated Anghel and shared his excitement that this major award was presented to a student in a podiatry-led lab. n 66 APMA News June 2011
