APMAPAC Update APMAPAC Champion: American Academy of Podiatric Practice Management It is with great enthusiasm that the APMAPAC Board recognizes the American Academy of Podiatric Practice Management (AAPPM) as its APMAPAC Champion this month. The AAPPM board is the only APMA affiliate board to support APMAPAC 100 percent. The board has done so for the last five years, to the tune of more than $37,000! And that figure doesn’t even include contributions collected at AAPPM practice management meetings held throughout the year (in excess of $27,000). AAPPM is known as “the voice of practice management for the profession,” as well as “the friendliest group in podiatry.” Its membership has grown over the last several years to approximately 1,500 through the leadership of Hal Ornstein, DPM, AAPPM chair; Jeffrey Frederick, DPM, AAPPM president; and the AAPPM Board of Trustees. Tedi Clarke, DPM, planted the seeds that germinated into a loyal Hal Ornstein, DPM relationship between APMAPAC and AAPPM. He inspired and mentored Harvey Lederman, DPM, who simultaneously held the positions of AAPPM president and APMAPAC vice chair. Dr. Lederman sought 100-percent participation from the AAPPM board and actively pursued contributions from the membership. As a result, AAPPM continues this tradition. “Interestingly, I have had a bird’s eye view from my perch for many years, seeing what our APMAPAC does for us and the positive changes [it has] helped make in holding our ground when strong and influential forces have tried to crush us,” Dr. Ornstein said. “It is my hope that our colleagues do not look at the annual contribution as an expense, but a necessary investment in the future of our profession. I deliver this message from my heart and sincerely feel that our profession would no longer exist without our APMAPAC. We all have a responsibility to make an annual contribution no matter the amount.” “As a result of Dr. Lederman’s example, we have an expectation of leadership that we live each day,” added Dr. Frederick. “Many of us do not have the luxury of time to invest in legislative advocacy and lobbying activities; however, we all have a checkbook, and it’s easy to write a check. Advocacy will have the biggest impact on our own futures and patient outcomes, but APMAPAC helps make that advocacy effective. Thanks to APMA Legislative Advocacy and APMAPAC, we have a history of successes such as DME exemptions, HIT in72 APMA News June 2011 centive inclusion, salvaging Medicare fees from cuts, and many more. Nothing can hold a candle to what the PAC can help do for you, dollar for dollar! I challenge every affiliate organization’s Board of Trustees to be 100 percent participants in APMAPAC to equal or beat what we at AAPPM have raised from our seminars. In the end, all our leaders must lead by example. APMAPAC and AAPPM put you in a position to succeed! It is heartening to hear not only from the elder statesmen of podiatric medicine, but also from younger APMA members, that they value both AAPPM and APMAPAC. Alison DeWaters, DPM, a secondyear APMA member, observed, “As the youngest board member of AAPPM, it is crystal clear to me that more than ever, with the changes in health care and our government’s Alison DeWaters, DPM involvement, … our new generation of podiatrists must all support APMAPAC as much as possible. I understand the financial challenges faced by new practitioners, but please understand that our best hope for a bright future is to be well-represented in legislative affairs. This can only lead to future successes for all of us, so I challenge every new practitioner to give as much as possible to APMAPAC.” “The AAPPM Board of Trustees are some of the most dedicated individuals I have ever had the pleasure of working with,” said Bill McCann, DPM, AAPPM trustee and APMAPAC board member. “They are serious educators, dedicated to the vision of advancing the profession. That commitment is evident in their generous annual contributions to APMAPAC. All of AAPPM’s trustees give $1,000 annually, as does the executive director (who is not even a podiatrist).
