Five new evaluators, recommended by the American Board of Podiatric Orthopedics and Primary Podiatric Medicine (ABPOPPM) and/or the American Board of Podiatric Surgery (ABPS), and 12 experienced evaluators attended the conference. An overview of accreditation and approval was presented to new evaluators. Additionally, CREC members Marc Benard, DPM, and James Lamb explained to new evaluators the interrelationships between the boards and the council, why evaluation teams include representation from both boards and the council, and the significance of collaboration among the on-site evaluators. Dr. Benard and Lamb are the ABPOPPM and ABPS executive directors, respectively. CPME Associate Director Loretta Waldron discussed the importance of thoroughly reviewing pre-evaluation materials before the visit, asking insightful and appropriate questions, listening to responses, and recording information accurately in the team report. She also explained the process of how the report moves from the team to the Residency Review Committee (RRC) and council. New and experienced evaluators were treated Saturday to the collective knowledge of CREC members, all of whom are involved either directly with residencies as directors, attendings, or evaluators, or indirectly as staff of the organizations involved in the residency approval process. The participants discussed in detail CPME 320, Standards and Requirements for Approval of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Residencies. Tim Ford, DPM, director of the PM&S-36 sponsored by Jewish Hospital and St. Mary’s Healthcare in Louisville, KY, chair of CPME’s RRC, and team chair, and Randall Dei, DPM, director of the PM&S-36 sponsored by Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital in Milwaukee, former RRC member, and team chair on many visits, emphasized the importance of knowing the standards and requirements and applying them consistently. Nahla Wu, CPME assistant director, reminded the evaluators of the importance of using their analytic thinking skills, podiatric expertise, and writing abilities during the visit. Gregg Young, DPM, CREC member, team chair on numerous on-site evaluations, and director of the PM&S-36 sponsored by Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, UT, emphasized ensuring that the information in one section of the team report is substantiated by the documentation reviewed and interviews conducted. Many evaluators found the highlight of the conference to be the extensive review and discussion of resident logging of procedures and cases in Podiatry Residency Resource presented by Drs. Ford, Dei, and Young, and Stuart Wertheimer, DPM, CREC member, director of the PM&S-36 sponsored by Saint John Hospital and Medical Center in Detroit, former member of the RRC, and team chair on numerous visits. n • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • Boston University Medical Center, Boston Catholic Health System–Sisters of Charity Hospital, Buffalo, NY Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center, Augusta, GA Community Medical Center, Scranton, PA Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Atlanta Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Lebanon, PA Florida Hospital East Orlando, Orlando Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, Jamaica, NY Jewish Hospital and St. Mary’s Healthcare, Louisville, KY (and fellowship) Kaiser Permanente Medical Center, Vallejo, CA Lakewood Regional Medical Center, Lakewood, CA Long Beach Memorial Medical Center, Long Beach, CA Loretto Hospital, Chicago Loyola University Medical Center, Maywood, IL Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center, Toledo, OH Mount Vernon Hospital, Mount Vernon, NY North Colorado Medical Center, Greeley, CO Sacred Heart Hospital, Chicago Saint Francis Hospital & Medical Center, Hartford, CT Saint Vincent Hospital, Worcester, MA Trinitas Regional Medical Center, Elizabeth, NJ Veterans Affairs New York Harbor Health Care System, New York Weiss Memorial Hospital and Oak Forest Hospital of Cook County, Chicago Collaborative Residency Evaluator Committee During the third annual evaluator training conference held May 20–21 in Chicago, 17 evaluators learned what they might find when participating this fall in the first on-site evaluations of PMSR programs.
