Worthy of Note Barry University Honors Drs. Brand at Dedication and Commencement Ninety-one-year-old medical pioneer Margaret Brand, MD, accepted an honorary Doctor of Science degree from Barry University’s School of Podiatric Medicine (BUSPM) during its commencement ceremonies. Dr. Brand also accepted a posthumous honorary Doctor of Science degree on behalf of her late husband, Paul Brand, MD. For more than four decades, the Drs. Brand treated countless Hansen’s Disease (formerly known as leprosy) patients Glenn B. Gastwirth, DPM, APMA executive director and CEO, spoke at the dedication and offered congratulations to BUSPM. IPMA Welcomes New Executive Director The Illinois Podiatric Medical Association (IPMA) has named Michael Hriljac, DPM, as its new executive director. He replaces Mary Feeley, who served as executive director for 16 years. Dr. Hriljac has a master’s degree in health law from Loyola University Chicago School of Law and a law degree from John Marshall Law School in Chicago. He graduated from the Scholl Michael Hriljac, DPM College of Podiatric Medicine in 1979 after receiving his bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Illinois at Chicago. In 1979, Dr. Hriljac founded Ridgeland Podiatry Center, Ltd., in Berwyn, IL, and ran that practice until 1999, when he left to pursue his law degree. He is a past president of IPMA and served a number of years as an APMA delegate. Dr. Hriljac served as chief of podiatric surgery at Oak Park Hospital, Oak Park, IL, and MacNeal Hospital, Berwyn, IL. He also chaired the Podiatric Licensing Section for the Illinois Department of Professional Regulation. He is a trustee at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science and Rosalind Franklin University Health System and has served on numerous professional and other not-for-profit boards. “His combined experiences in podiatric medicine, health law, and legal matters will serve us well,” said Marlene Reid, DPM, president of IPMA. Their groundbreaking work made it possible for insensate patients, including those with Hansen’s Disease and diabetes, to function normally despite enormous handicaps. The Drs. Brand traveled the world to teach others about their research and treatment successes and served as advocates for their patients. In tribute to the Brands’ mission, BUSPM officially named its first research hub the Paul & Margaret Brand Research Center. The new center will make it possible for Barry professors and students to conduct research studies to identify the best treatment to promote wound healing, reduce amputations, and educate the public about prevention of wounds. “The dedication of the Paul & Margaret Brand Research Center at Barry University will continue the Brands’ legacy by conducting collaborative research to reduce diabetic complications, including ulcers and amputations,” said Jeffrey Jensen, DPM, BUSPM dean. “Our work has already started as Dr. Gerhild Packert, professor of biology and associate dean for the Barry University College of Health Sciences, and I are collaborating on a US Department of Defense $2 million research grant that will study if nitric oxide can safely penetrate tissues and eradicate bacteria to benefit soldiers wounded in the field.” 58 APMA News July/August 2011 SALSA Receives Funding for New Research on Diabetic Foot Care Two separate $1.1-million research grants will help the University of Arizona Department of Surgery’s Southern Arizona Limb Salvage Alliance (SALSA) continue its battle against diabetes-related amputations. “This gives our team even more inspiration,” noted David G. Armstrong, DPM, MD, PhD, SALSA’s director and principal investigator on both grants. The two proposals are characteristic of the “simplicity in technology” approach for which SALSA and its collaborative
