Affiliates Corner Dr. Yakel Elected President of AAPSM At its annual meeting held in July in Boston, the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine (AAPSM) announced that James D. Yakel, DPM, a sports medicine podiatrist in private practice in Brighton, CO, was elected president. Dr. Yakel received his DPM degree from the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine. In addition to being a fellow and president of AAPSM, Dr. Yakel is a fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, a diplomate of the American Board of Podiatric Surgery, and a fellow of the American Professional Wound Care Association. Elected along with Dr. Yakel were: President-elect Robert ConenelJames D. Yakel, DPM lo, DPM, Orangeburg, NY; Vice President Paul R. Langer, DPM, Minneapolis; Secretary/Treasurer David Jenkins, Glendale, AZ; and newly elected Director Dianne Mitchell, DPM, Sacramento, CA. Karen Langone, DPM, of Southampton, NY, serves as immediate-past president. “It is a privilege to serve as the AAPSM’s new president and to continue implementing the strategic plan that was put into place by my predecessors,” said Dr. Yakel. AAPSM also presented the following awards during the meeting: 2011 Richard Schuster Award to Amol Saxena, DPM (Brian Fullem, DPM, accepted the award on his behalf), and the Robert Barnes Distinguished Service Award to Timothy Dutra, DPM. In December, Collin Pehde, DPM, provided an informative wound care presentation to the club. In January, ACFAOM put on an orthotics casting workshop in which Dr. Frush explained the process of orthosis creation and demonstrated how to cast for orthotics with plaster slipper casts and bio-foam. Des Moines University ACFAOM Club The American College of Foot and Ankle Orthopedics and Medicine (ACFAOM) Club at Des Moines University (DMU) has been busy in the past year. The club kicked off the 2010– 2011 academic year with a Club/Events/Organization Day in August, where 42 new members joined. Club activities began in October with the annual Injection Lab, which featured Katherine Frush, DPM, instructing students on how to perform different types of nerve blocks on the foot and ankle, before allowing students to practice their new skills on cadavers. At the November Dermatology Lab, James Mahoney, DPM, presented the proper techniques for preparing, viewing, and diagnosing pedal fungal infections via KOH preparation. Participants prepared slides with fungal samples and practiced 50 APMA News October 2011 the types of products used by practicing podiatrists. Paul Dayton, DPM, of Fort Dodge, IA, spoke to the club in March about tissue preservation and external fixation. In April, G. Bradley Klock, DO, discussed lower-limb osteopathic manipulative medicine, and students practiced these techniques on each other. In conjunction with DMU’s Podiatric Practice Management and Journal Club, BioMedix gave the club a presentation on its PADnet and EMR systems. The ACFAOM club also received insight from Alex Pruitt, MD, on an orthopedic surgeon’s approach to the foot and ankle and the working relationship between orthopedics and podiatry. For the last workshop of the year, Laura Covil, PT, presented a kinesiology tape workshop. In addition to learning a great deal, the club has given back to the community at numerous events during the past year, including the ADA Step Out Walk to Fight Diabetes and DMU’s annual Senior Health Fair. At the fair, students helped to educate the public on common foot ailments and foot care, and students performed routine foot exams. ACFAOM also helped raise money for the YMCA Healthy Living Center, took part in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Walk in the Des Moines Skywalk, and participated in DMU’s Mission Active children’s health fair. n http://www.aapsm.org
