Butterfield Receives APMSA’s Highest Student Honor
Ted Butterfield, a member of the Class of 2012 at the College of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery at Des Moines University (CPMS), was honored with the American Podiatric Medical Students’ Association’s (APMSA) 2011 Leadership Award. Butterfield accepted the award with what his peers consider his customary humility. “It is such an honor to receive this award. Working with the APMSA has been both a blessing and a privilege for me,” he said. “There have been so many students past and present with positive leadership qualities who have served as an example and inspiration for me. I owe so much to them.” The APMSA Leadership Award is presented to the member of the APMSA House of Delegates who has made the most outstanding efforts and contributions to APMSA on behalf of students. This Ted Butterfield annual award honors an APMSA delegate who has worked consistently to further APMSA’s goals and has shown outstanding local and national leadership. APMSA President Adam Siegel applauded Butterfield: “Through his diligence and hard work, Butterfield has separated himself as one of the APMSA’s greatest assets. Not only has he shown himself to be a vital part of the organization, but he will also leave behind a legacy that will be hard to equal.” Butterfield is the APMSA CPMS 2012 delegate and also serves as APMSA liaison to the National Board of Podiatric Medical Examiners (NBPME). In this role, he serves as a functional member of the NBPME Executive Board, having access to all discussions and documentation, except those relating to the development of testing material, and provides students’ reports to NBPME and vice versa. NBPME President Mindy Benton, DPM, praised Butterfield’s service as the APMSA delegate to the board from 2009 to 2011. “The entire board was impressed with his effective advocacy for his organization’s members and with his service to individual members regarding NBPME matters,” Dr. Benton said. “He will be an outstanding addition to our profession.”
