In this issue, you get much more from the physician-in-chief: his speech to the March House of Delegates meeting. Joseph M. Caporusso, DPM, was installed as the new president of the association on March 18 and shared the words printed on page 14 with delegates from around the country. Watch for his first President’s Message in the May issue of APMA News. Also in this edition, we talk to Edwin Wolf, DPM, national residency genesis facilitator with the American Association of Colleges of Podiatric Medicine, as he embarks on his effort to address the residency shortage in podiatric medicine. Dr. Wolf shares his strategy and outlines the significant benefits for APMA members of becoming involved in a residency program or starting a new one. Read the interview on page 26. Dr. Wolf’s goal is for available residency positions to equal 110 percent of the number of graduates eligible for a residency. This will be an important step in the evolution of podiatric postgraduate training. On page 32, we look at the history of postgraduate education in our Profile in Progress. The rapid evolution of this important element of podiatric medical education is one of the most notable marks of progress in the profession. Just 60 years ago, the first postgraduate programs were emerging; today, the three-year Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Residency promises educational similitude with allopathic and osteopathic physicians. Take a step even further back in time in APMA by the Decade, page 30, as we recount how podiatrists “Kept America Marching” during World War II. This fascinating epoch in American history wrought irreversible changes in the fabric of the nation, and podiatric medicine was changing as well. During the war, the National Association of Chiropodists honed its advocacy skills and developed its first public relations campaigns, capabilities that continue to be vital to the profession today. In this issue, you’ll read about a thoroughly modern public relations campaign, our spring foot health campaign, targeting teenagers with foot health information. See page 10. Also in this month’s issue, get an inside look at the Vision 2015 Committee’s Student Recruitment Forum and its outcomes. The forum emphasized the importance of continuing to increase the quality of the applicant pool for the colleges of podiatric medicine, and it defined a new division of responsibilities for the profession. See the full story on page 28. An important part of the discussion at that forum was APMA’s focus on marketing the profession of podiatric medicine, and its new, enhanced strategic focus on enfranchising young physicians. As part of that strategic focus, APMA has launched Your APMA, a regular insert in this magazine that addresses the needs of young physicians. Young physicians may read Your APMA with their APMA News, or pull it out to save or take with them on the go. In this issue of Your APMA, we provide a step-by-step guide to securing hospital privileges, and we profile a young physician advocating for his profession with the political power players in his state.
