Who’s the most memorable teacher you’ve ever had, and why? Ms. Taub (now married—Mrs. Weinstein?). She was my high school Chumash (Bible) teacher. She challenged her students to think. The class was difficult as she only spoke in Hebrew and forced us to ask and answer everything in Hebrew. While it was somewhat of a struggle for me, I credit her for my fluency in the language. She also was instrumental in my spending a year abroad studying in Israel between high school and college. When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? A professional athlete. I was always very athletic and excelled in sports. I recall playing on my brother’s little league team, and he is two years older than [I am]. At some point, reality set in, and I realized that it wasn’t going to happen. Thankfully, I had a simultaneous desire to be a doctor. I recall wanting to be a pediatrician—this was really the only doctor I had visited. But then I decided dealing with crying kids all day was only okay if they were mine. I felt that over time, dealing with someone else’s crying kids might wear me out. 7. What would your last meal be? I would have to go with my mom’s flanken (short ribs) with potatoes. It’s just one of those dishes that can’t be duplicated, even with the recipe. 2. What do you do for fun during your time off? Anything that involves my two daughters. It could be something as mundane as taking a walk or hanging out in their princess tent. If it is with them, it is fun. If it happens to be past their bedtime, find me a basketball game to join, and I am there. 8. Where or to whom do you go for advice? That depends on the problem. If we are talking about life issues, my wife and parents are my main “go-to” people. If we are talking podiatric advice, I have an “inner circle” comprised of a combination of people who trained me, classmates, and colleagues I have met along the way in my podiatric travels. 3. 4. What is your favorite movie? “Shawshank Redemption.” If you could meet any famous person, who would it be, and why? Larry Bird. He was one of my favorite athletes to watch as I was growing up. As a 13-year-old shooting hoops in my parents’ driveway, I always imagined having the opportunity to challenge Larry Bird on my home court. I thought I would beat him, as I knew every nook and cranny on that cement driveway. The backboard was tilted a few inches to the right, and I felt it would take Bird a little time to get accustomed to it—enough time for me to beat him. (If anyone happens to know him—I know he suffered from heel spur issues—and could hook this up for me, I’d challenge him on any court just for the thrill.) 9. What is the most indispensable piece of technology you own? My computer. I met my beautiful wife through the Internet. I am able to stay in touch with family and friends all over the world. I have a wealth of information at the touch of my fingertips. I am able to do some office work from home through GOTOMYPC. I am able to keep an eye on the stock market and place my trades ... my computer has truly become indispensable. 10. What is something about you that would surprise your friends? I was always taught that if you can count your friends on one hand, you are very lucky. Meaning that a million “Facebook friends” aren’t the same as those solid three to four friends. When you have good friends and are a good friend ... they pretty much know everything. I think my friends know me pretty well for who I am. No real surprises I can think of. n 5. Why is podiatry the best career for you? I think the combination of job security, helping 106 APMA News May 2012
