Website Wisdom Five Tips for Searching APMA.org One goal of the APMA.org redesign was to provide a more robust website search tool, or search engine, to help members locate content more quickly and easily. Our new search engine is faster and more efficient. Outlined below are ways to be more search-savvy and find exactly what you are looking for. Even when using a great search engine, you can use strategies to make it easier to locate information. Try these five tips to improve your searches on APMA.org: • • Be speciﬁc, but brief: Avoid terms that are too general, like “reimbursement,” because those will likely return too many results. But it’s also possible to be too specific. Very long phrases, such as “Medicare Reimbursement Statistics BMAD Data 2012,” may not return the result you need, because that exact phrase is not on the page you’re searching for. A search term like “BMAD Data” is a better option—it’s specific without being too long. • search, enter keywords, then select from any of the optional search categories listed. Searches can be limited by content type, topic, audience, and date range. Use quotation marks: Putting quotation marks around a phrase tells the search engine to only return pages that include the search terms exactly how you typed them. This tip can help limit the number of results returned and ensure they contain the terms you are looking for. If using quotation marks around your search term doesn’t return the results you want, remove them and try again. • Apply advanced search ﬁlters: The “Advanced Search” tool can be used to refine your search. Access the “Advanced Search” by clicking on the link below the search box on any page or clicking the “Refine Search” button after completing a basic search. Review them all carefully. A Web page may not have the search terms you used in its title, but it could still include the information you need. Carefully read the description below each result, and then click on any pages you think might contain what you need. Consider using the “find” function of your Internet browser (Ctrl-F) to search the page for your keywords. You can always use the browser’s “back” button to return to your search results and look at another page. • Try, try again: If your first search term doesn’t turn up the results you want, go back and try again. Review the tips above to see if there’s a way to modify your search to make it more successful. Ultimately, the success of a search hinges on both the search tool used and the search terms entered. The search engine will try to find the most relevant results based on the search terms used, but if terms are too vague or detailed, the results will not be helpful.
