CPME Update Spring Meeting The Council on Podiatric Medical Education held its spring meeting at APMA headquarters April 24–27. The council’s agenda included consideration of continuing or new approval status of 23 residency programs and nine continuing podiatric medical education sponsors. The recommendations from council committees, which completed their deliberations at meetings and conference calls held February through April, constituted the majority of the CPME agenda. The Continuing Education Committee and the Residency Review Committee (RRC) held their meetings in March. The RRC concluded its business by conference call just prior to the council meeting. The council also considered reports of the Joint Committee on the Recognition of Specialty Boards (JCRSB) and the Collaborative Residency Evaluator Committee (CREC). JCRSB and CREC met in February and March, respectively. The Accreditation Committee and the council’s Budget and Executive Committees also met in April in Bethesda, MD. Relative to the colleges of podiatric medicine, the council considered progress reports from five colleges and the annual report submitted by each college. Residency actions taken at the March RRC and April CPME meetings included: (See the October 2012 edition of CPME 330, Procedures for Approval of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Residencies, at www.cpme.org for definitions of the following categories of approval.) • • • • • • • Sustain Action to Withdraw Approval—0 Withdraw Approval—1 Probationary Approval—3 Approval—18 Provisional Approval—4 Progress report considered, no change to approval status, additional information requested—58 Progress report considered, no change to approval status, no additional information requested—21 Highlights of CPME’s four-day meeting included a decision to continue the moratorium on applications for new colleges of podiatric medicine and increases in enrollment at accredited colleges of podiatric medicine; the 10-percent enrollment buffer; and ongoing discussions about the need for additional residency positions and programs. The council also proposed a revision to the college accreditation standards requiring each college of podiatric medicine to provide the public with outcomes data. The council elected its officers, to be effective at the close of the council’s October meeting: Oleg Petrov, DPM, of Chicago was elected chair, and Lori DeBlasi, DPM, of Marysville, OH, was elected vice chair. n 54 APMA News June 2013 Proposed Revisions to Continuing Education Approval Documents The council’s standards, requirements, and procedures are reviewed and revised on a regularly scheduled basis. In order to facilitate these reviews, ad hoc educational policies, standards, requirements, and procedures committees are appointed. The council’s 2012–2013 schedule includes the review of its continuing education documents. After holding two meetings, the Continuing Education Ad Hoc Committee completed its revisions to the standards and requirements document and the procedural document and formally adopted both draft documents in September 2012. At its October 2012 meeting, the council reviewed and approved the draft documents. In keeping with CPME’s obligation to inform its community of interest of proposed changes to approval standards and requirements and procedures, the council notified organizations and individuals in a memorandum dated December 10, 2012, about proposed revisions to CPME 720, Standards, Requirements, and Guidelines for Approval of Continuing Education in Podiatric Medicine, and 730, Procedures for Approval of Continuing Education in Podiatric Medicine (both drafts are dated October 2012). The documents were made available on CPME.org. The council requested comments about the proposed revisions through April 1. At its April meeting, the council reviewed all comments from the community of interest. Based on the many comments received, the council elected to return CPME 720 and 730 to a subcommittee of the council to work further on the documents. The council has requested that the subcommittee submit a report that either incorporates the additional changes recommended by the community of interest or provides a rationale for not accepting the recommendations. The council will consider the subcommittee’s report at its October meeting. n Efforts to Increase Residency Positions The council, RRC, and council staff continue to focus significant attention on facilitating increases in positions in approved podiatric residencies. Following a thorough review in January and February of available clinical experiences, CPME notified each program with the clinical capacity to increase positions of the review and decision to authorize the increase. By the end of April, the council had received formal acceptances for 11 new residency positions. Together with the council’s efforts in 2009 and 2010–2011 to increase positions, a total of 93 new residency positions have been authorized. In April, the RRC determined that four new programs with a total of 7/7/7 positions were eligible for on-site evaluation, with visits to be conducted by June 30. As of the end of April, three additional applications were in process for new programs with a total of 5/5/5 positions. The council continues to expedite review and consideration of all applications for provisional approval. n http://www.CPME.org http://www.cpme.org
