Affiliates Corner ASPS Has Reached 1,000 Members When David Yeager, DPM, became chair of the American Society of Podiatric Surgeons (ASPS) in August 2012, one of his early goals was to hit a membership milestone: Dr. Yeager wanted 1,000 members by July 2013. At the time, ASPS had slightly more than 700 members, and Dr. Yeager believed 1,000 members by July was attainable for the organization. ASPS met its goal four months ahead of schedule. “[ASPS] is proud to announce that we have reached 1,000 members,” said Dr. Yeager. “We are excited about this achievement for our members and for our board. We thoroughly enjoy surgically educating our more than 1,000 members and look forward to providing Pure Education to thousands more in the future!” ASPS is APMA’s surgical affiliate, founded in 2009 and dedicated to advancing the knowledge and skills of podiatrists in the area of surgery of the foot, ankle, and governing and related structures. The principal purpose of ASPS is to facilitate education and research activities in the area of podiatric surgery. These activities reinforce and support licensing and certification processes, helping to produce highly skilled podiatric surgeons. The ASPS Board of Directors thanks all ASPS members for their loyalty and support. n Cowboy Meeting Benefits Texas Residency Programs Sixty practicing podiatrists and residents met at a dude ranch in Bandera, TX, in April for the annual Bandera Gathering, a fundraiser for Texas residency programs that was started by the late Louis Bogy, DPM. Thirteen residents presented cases and were critiqued. The audience voted for the best resident case presentation, and this year the vote was tied. The winners were Ted Butterfield, DPM, from John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth (director, Brian Carpenter, DPM), and Rebecca Smith, DPM, from Scott & White Memorial Hospital in Temple (director, Douglas Murdoch, DPM). The winners each received a $300 grant. The meeting featured three keynote speakers: Larry Harkless, DPM; Bryan Markinson, DPM; and Hemant Makan, director, Texas State Board of Podiatric Licensing. Profits from the Bandera Gathering are donated back to the participating programs. Visit www.txpmf. org for more information. n Western U Student Wins APMWA Student Writing Competition Colin McKay, a first-year student at the Western University of Health Sciences College of Podiatric Medicine, has been named the winner of the 27th Annual American Podiatric Medical Writers Association Student Writing Competition for his paper, “Practice Management, a Look at Tax Entities.” McKay will receive a $1,000 honorarium from a special endowment by Dr. and Mrs. Steven Berlin to the APMA Educational Foundation. Honorable Mention went to Michael J. Huchital, a firstyear student at the New York College of Podiatric Medicine, for his paper, “Empathy in Medical Education: Teaching Physicians-in-Training Mindfulness and Emotional Intelligence.” AAWP Scientific Conference The 2013 American Association for Women Podiatrists (AAWP) Scientific Conference was held in Coral Gables, FL, in April. Speakers from across the country presented on diverse topics, and the exhibit hall was filled with sponsors. Attendees were able to obtain up to 15 CECH in a relaxed atmosphere, with time available in the schedule to enjoy the world-renowned spa at the Biltmore Resort. Western University of Health Sciences College of Podiatric Medicine sponsored the continuing education hours. The conference was led by AAWP Co-Vice President and Conference Chair Aparna Duggirala, DPM. The scientific chair for the conference was Kathleen Satterfield, DPM, and AAWP CoVice President Alison Garten, DPM, was the sponsorship chair. The conference included recognition of AAWP past presidents, including Gina Saffo, DPM (1996–1998); Corrine Kauderer, DPM (1998–2000); Marlene Reid, DPM (2002–2004); Jane Anderson, DPM (2004–2006); Kathleen Satterfield, DPM (2006–2008); and Sheryl Strich, DPM (2009–2012). The annual AAWP meeting was conducted during the presidential luncheon and included election of the new AAWP board.
