Using Technology to Enhance Education
Technology has many advantages, as well as some disadvantages. Many of us would love to completely disconnect
from e-mails, texts, etc., at least temporarily. One distinct advantage of technology, though, is how it can be used as an
efficient, cost-effective way to educate ourselves—on our
own schedules. For busy podiatric residents, for example, being able to view educational lectures on a smartphone, tablet,
or laptop is certainly a plus.
In CPME publication 320, Standards and Requirements for
Approval of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Residencies, the Council on Podiatric Medical Education identifies competencies residents must achieve and indicates that residents are required to
engage in weekly didactic activities. To that end, in cooperation
with APMA affiliates—the American College of Foot & Ankle
Orthopedics & Medicine, the American Society of Podiatric
REdRC is set up so any APMA
member can view the lectures
to review a particular topic
or use them as a refresher
to prepare for board exams.
Medicine, the American Society of Podiatric Surgeons, and the
Association of Extremity Nerve Surgeons—APMA developed
the Residency Education Resource Center (REdRC). This online
program provides 30- to 40-minute lectures that are based on
the competencies identified by CPME. The PowerPoint lectures
on a variety of topics can be viewed by residents on smartphones, laptops, tablets, and PCs. Many of the lectures have a
quiz associated with them that residents can take to determine
if they understood all the key points of a given lecture.
When residents subscribe to REdRC, their residency directors automatically receive an invitation for a complimentary subscription. Once residency directors subscribe, they
can monitor their residents’ activity, including which lecture
presentations they have viewed and their quiz scores.
REdRC became operational in July 2012, offering lecture
programs for first-year residents. Thanks to the generous
support from REdRC’s founding sponsors, APMA waived
subscriptions for the initial year of the program. For the
2013–14 residency training year, once again thanks to sponsor support, subscriptions are once again complimentary for
all APMA member residents. APMA membership is free for
residents (although some states may charge a small fee to join

the state component association). Residents who would like
to become APMA members can access the membership form
at www.apma.org. For 2013–14, there is a full slate of lectures for first-year residents, and lectures for second-year
residents are being added as they are developed.
Future REdRC plans include adding lectures for thirdyear residents starting in July 2014, developing a CV builder
for residents nearing the completion of their training, adding
lectures on coding and practice management, and possibly
establishing a job board function. REdRC is set up so any
APMA member can view the lectures to review a particular
topic or use them as a refresher to prepare for board exams.
Residents can subscribe to REdRC at www.redrc.org. Members can log in with the user name and password they use to
access the members-only content on APMA.org.
