President’s Message HELLPP is on the Way “Never, never—in nothing great or small, large or petty—never give in except to convictions of honor and good sense. Never yield to force; never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy.” —Winston Churchill In this month’s installment of Federal Advocacy Forum (page 36), Legislative Committee Chair Seth Rubenstein, DPM, shares the news that our Helping Ensure Life- and Limb-Saving Access to Podiatric Physicians (HELLPP) Act has now been introduced in the Senate as well as the House of Representatives. This news is yet another step in the right direction as we continue the fight for recognition as physicians under the Medicaid statute. Some of our members—usually those whose states do not restrict Medicaid access to podiatrists—wonder why APMA continues to engage in this decades-long effort. Dr. Rubenstein helpfully reminds us that even in those states, as long as podiatry remains “optional,” we will be on the budgetary chopping block. But the HELLPP Act is about much more than maintaining coverage. It’s about protecting our most vulnerable patients. It’s about sound policy that ensures savings for our health-care system and better care coordination under Medicare. But most of all, it’s about what’s right. Today’s podiatrist is a physician, deserving of that title based on his or her education, training, and experience. And APMA won’t rest until we achieve that recognition as physicians from the federal government. APMA never rests in its efforts to serve its members. We’re fighting this battle on Capitol Hill. We’re defending our members’ right to the highest-quality continuing education by fighting unfair provisions in the Physician Payment Sunshine Act. We’re fighting within the profession for the needs of our students and young physicians, particularly those who have not yet been able to match with a residency program. As president, I have the opportunity to see the awesome tenacity with which our association works for us on a daily basis. Get involved with APMA— on a committee, as an attendee at a meeting, or just by taking advantage of the many resources the association makes available to you—and I think you’ll come to understand the steadfast support that only APMA can offer. Be a part of APMA’s unrelenting pursuit of our goals. Please contact your legislators and encourage them to sign on as cosponsors to the HELLPP Act. Use the eAdvocacy site (www.apma.org/eAdvocacy) to send a message in a matter of minutes. And while you’re at it, take the time to peruse APMA.org to find out more about how APMA is working for you, your practice, and your patients. Together, we will achieve the goals we have set for our profession, because our association will never, never, never give in. Editor Peggy Tresky Assistant Editor Aimee R.
