APMA IS SOCIAL: ARE YOU? hen I look back over the past 18 months, I think about how quickly time has passed. My adventure began in December 2011 when I applied to become APMA’s inaugural Public Health Fellow at The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice (TDI). I have to admit, I was not entirely sure what this position entailed when I went to the interview, but I always enjoyed being in a classroom and learning new things. After my interview in Hanover, NH, in March 2012, I returned to Colorado to complete the final months of my residency training before moving 2,000 miles across the country to represent our profession in a Master of Public Health (MPH) program. The MPH program was filled with a tremendous amount of information. I attended classes three to four days a week, with time outside of the classroom filled with independent and group projects, studying for quizzes and exams, and engaging in activities within the greater Dartmouth community. I must say that my time at TDI was well worth it! While certain courses were required, there were plenty of elective courses to choose from to tailor my experience. I enrolled in additional courses in ethics, qualitative research methods, quality improvement, biostatistics and health services research, and decision and cost-effectiveness analysis. While the Learning in small-group settings and working on projects with diverse classmates gave me a chance to ask questions and learn from others’ experiences. courses provided a foundation, the faculty members supported me as I put that knowledge into practice. My groups consisted of hospital administrators and staff; clinicians in a variety of professions including vascular, orthopedic, and general surgery; critical care; endocrinology; and infectious disease, as well as researchers and professionals from all over the world, including China, Singapore, and Tanzania.
