President's Message

Together is the Key
During my inaugural speech, I told APMA members about the high value
I place on relationships. Right now, we're building a relationship that I believe
could be critical for APMA and its legislative goals. We've reached out to both
the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) and the American
Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Surgeons (AOFAS), organizations that have historically posed challenges to the advancement of our profession. We met most
recently with the president and president-elect of AOFAS, and I believe we
may have found some common ground on our VA Provider Equity Act. It's
going to be important to continue to talk with AAOS and AOFAS to build a
deeper understanding of each other's goals and priorities. That kind of longterm relationship will pay dividends for podiatry.
I hope you'll spend some time reading the special section devoted to the
APMA Educational Foundation in this issue. Our foundation plays such a pivotal role in this profession. I come from a family of educators, and I recognize
that our podiatric medical education comes at a high cost. I've made a personal
commitment to the foundation and our students by creating an endowment
named after my late father and becoming a member of the Legacy Circle. I hope
you will all make some meaningful contribution to the APMA Educational
Foundation to benefit our students and the future of this great profession.
I also hope you will be a part of recruiting new students to our profession.
We need to lead by example. I have mentored many prospective students over
the years. Currently two of them are in residency and one is in her third year
of podiatric medical school. APMA, along with the American Association of
Colleges of Podiatric Medicine, the individual colleges, and other stakeholders, is engaged in a significant effort to promote careers in podiatry and recruit
a robust, high-quality pool of applicants to our colleges. We hear again and
again that students become interested in podiatry after a firsthand experience
with a physician. It's just another example of relationships making a difference. Please take the time to volunteer as a mentor for prospective students.
Visit www.dpmnetwork.org/membership/become-a-mentor to sign up.
Of course, our ability to offer students the residency training required to
practice makes a difference to our success in marketing careers in podiatry. We
have made tremendous progress in addressing shortfalls in the number of approved residency positions in this profession. In 2017, the number of approved
positions was equal to approximately 107 percent of the number of graduates.
Unfortunately, a number of those positions ultimately were not offered by the
sponsoring institutions. We understand why those positions were not offered,
and CPME is communicating with the institutions to encourage them to offer
them in the future.
As you have probably read by now, APMA is engaged in a brand audit.
We're collecting data about perceptions of APMA, our products and services,
and even our name. We have engaged an outside consultant, McKinley Advisors, to assist us in this process. McKinley Advisors has expertise in organizational branding, specifically for association clients. Please take part in any
surveys you receive as part of this effort. APMA is, after all, your organization,
and our relationship with you, our members, is the one that matters most.
Remember we can't do any of this alone. Together is the key.
