CPME Update
US Department of Education Considers
CPME's Petition for Continued Recognition
The National Advisory Committee on Institutional Quality
and Integrity (NACIQI), a panel of the US Department of Education, has voted to recommend to the Secretary of Education that recognition of the Council on Podiatric Medical Education be awarded for the maximum five years without a
progress report. At its February meeting in Alexandria, VA, the
Advisory Committee concluded that the council is in full compliance with the secretary's Criteria for Recognition of Accrediting Agencies.
NACIQI praised the council as providing as clean a petition as possible, and singled out the council's efforts related
to student achievement, stating, "It is a model for how to report on student outcomes. This is terrific work in all the ways
that we frequently ask agencies to conduct their work."

Spring Meeting
The Council on Podiatric Medical Education held its spring
meeting at APMA headquarters in April. The recommendations
emanating from council committees, which completed their deliberations at meetings and conference calls held from February
through April, constitute the majority of each CPME agenda.
The Continuing Education Committee held its meeting in February, and the Residency Review Committee held its meeting in
March. The council also considered reports of the Joint Committee on the Recognition of Specialty Boards (JCRSB) and the

Collaborative Residency Evaluator Committee (CREC). JCRSB
and CREC met in February and March, respectively. The Accreditation Committee and the council's Budget and Executive
Committees also met in April in Bethesda.
Relative to colleges of podiatric medicine, the council
considered the August 2016 report of the team that conducted an on-site evaluation of the Kent State University College
of Podiatric Medicine and elected to extend accreditation of
the college through April 2025. The council also reviewed annual reports from colleges of podiatric medicine.
The council elected to lift all aspects of the moratorium on
applications for new colleges of podiatric medicine and increased enrollment at CPME-accredited colleges, effective
with the 2018-19 academic year. The council also adopted a
revision to CPME 130, Procedures for Accrediting Colleges of
Podiatric Medicine, that eliminates the procedure that allowed
annual fluctuations that result in a 10-percent-or-less increase
in the maximum number of students matriculated in the firstyear class without prior authorization from the council. The
council will continue to review the college graduate/residency position balance at each CPME meeting.
Residency actions at the April CPME meetings included

The council elected its officers, to be effective at the close
of the council's October meeting: Michael Trepal, DPM, of
New York was elected chair, and Kieran Mahan, DPM, of Philadelphia was elected vice chair.
The council also spent an entire day conducting a selfstudy. The council engages in periodic self-study as a formal
means to obtain input from its community of interest and to
enable strategic planning that takes into account the needs of
both CPME and the community of interest.
In preparing for the self-study, the council gathered data
from representative populations within the profession concerning the effectiveness of council processes and outcomes. In
March, the council forwarded surveys to its various constituent
populations. Twelve groups were selected for the survey, making up a potential respondent population of 703 people. Responses were received from 271 individuals (39 percent).
Compiled data were reviewed by CPME members prior to
the meeting, when the council analyzed the data, offered recommendations, and identified objectives and various correlated
strategies to be pursued over the course of the next five to six
years. Based on the council's discussions, council staff will prepare a draft of the self-study results for consideration and formal
approval during the council's October 2017 meeting.
