Infection Control Guidelines in Podiatry Offices
The CDC and the Joint Commission have
established a three-year collaborative project
to evaluate infection control guidelines in
the outpatient health-care setting. This
project, "Adaptation and Dissemination of
Infection Prevention and Control Guidelines to Prevent Healthcare Associated Ebola and Other Infections in Outpatient Settings," or "ADOPT" for short, was a direct
response to the lessons learned by the US healthcare system at large from the Ebola virus outbreak in
2014. Those cases highlighted the importance of core
infection prevention practices and served as the impetus
to increase safety in all US health-care facilities. Given the
trend in transitioning health-care delivery from acute
inpatient settings to outpatient settings, the goal of the
project is to evaluate, update, and expand utilization of
proper infection prevention and control guidelines to prevent

and lower the incidence of health care-associated infections in outpatient settings.
In total, the project identified 12 outpatient-focused medical specialties to study.
After consideration of infection control source
materials from the various represented specialties, the ADOPT project selected podiatry
and orthopedics as the first medical specialties
to create new infection control guidelines based
on the latest research fi ndings. Barry Rosenblum,
DPM, in Boston, and Gary Liao, DPM, of Durham, NC, will
be working with the CDC over the next two years to create
reasonable and adaptable state-of-the-art infection control
guidelines for the podiatric profession.

NYCPM Student Wins APMWA
Student Writing Competition
Jonathan Shalot, a firstyear student at the New
York College of Podiatric
Medicine (NYCPM), has
been named the winner of
the 31st Annual American
Podiatric Medical Writers
Association (APMWA) Student Writing Competition.
His paper was titled "Stress
Among Medical Students:
Coping Strategies & SoluJonathan Shalot
tions." Shalot will receive a
$1,000 honorarium from a
special endowment by Dr. and Mrs. Steven Berlin to the
APMA Educational Foundation.
The award for Honorable Mention went to Huguette
Marie-Patience Disasi, a fourth-year student at NYCPM,
for her paper, "Treating the Patient, Not Just the Disease:
Addressing Health-Care Disparities in Minority and Immigrant Populations."
