ADVOCACY SKILLS

he 2019 State Advocacy Forum will be
held August 16-17 in Milwaukee. The

event is a biennial conference providing
an opportunity for state component leaders to
discuss state legislative issues and to interact
with state medical and osteopathic leaders
and policymakers.
The theme of this year's forum is "Homegrown Advocacy," and participants will
learn how developing strong relationships
can improve your component's grassroots
advocacy efforts and lead to significant victories. This highly anticipated program will
also feature invited policymakers and
health-care provider ally speakers, as well as
informative discussions with your podiatrist
colleagues.
APMA continues to encourage young
physicians to advocate on the federal, state,
and local levels, and the APMA Center for
Professional Advocacy (CPA) is excited to
provide support for one young physician to
attend the forum through the Young Physician Advocate Scholarship. Scholarship

"It is underestimated how much we, as
podiatrists, need to be involved in our local
governments," said Dr. Rouse of his experience. "I now realize how important it is not
only to be involved in the local and state
governmental entities, but to know and work
with your legislature. Changes take time, but
seeds need to be planted early and cultivated
to grow to allow for changes to take place
either months or in most cases, years down
the line."

select the "Young Physician Advocate

Scholarship" link. You will need to complete
a form and upload your short essay answers
to the following questions:
1. How are you involved in state advocacy
to advance the podiatric medical profession, and what do you hope to learn by
participating in the 2019 State Advocacy
Forum?
2. Why is it important for young physicians to
become involved in state advocacy?
3. As a young physician, what do you consider to be your primary state legislative
concerns?
The deadline to apply for the scholarship is
May 31; the winner will be notified shortly
after this date. CPA will reimburse the scholarship recipient's travel and lodging expenses
to attend the State Advocacy Forum. He or
she will also receive per diem to cover two
days ($225/day).
