2019 Annual Giving Campaign
Kicks off for Student Scholarships
Members of the House of Delegates (HOD) helped the
APMA Educational Foundation receive PICA's matching
grant, driving a strong start to the 2019 Annual Giving
Campaign!
Thanks to early contributions from APMA members and
staﬀ, HOD attendees, and state components, the foundation
raised a total of $77,313 by the end of HOD.
Special appreciation goes to PICA for its renewed matching grant of up to $25,000. PICA has supported the foundation with a named endowment fund since the mid-1990s.
To encourage personal and component donations at the
HOD meeting, Kristen Brett, a third-year student at Kent State
University College of Podiatric Medicine and a scholarship
recipient, addressed the delegates. She thanked contributors
to the APMA Educational Foundation and provided a firsthand account of what scholarships mean to students:
"This scholarship is one of the most amazing benefits that
eligible students are able to receive. I am sure that many of
you are aware of the huge financial burden that third- and
fourth-year podiatric medical students face as they finish their
last two years of schooling. There are several additional expenses that are added monthly on top of the cost of podiatric
medical school yearly tuition. Those additional expenses in-

clude registration costs for boards Parts I, II, and III; rent and
travel for clerkships; flights and hotel stays for interviews; as
well as food, gas, and of course, some sort of caﬀeine to stay
awake for the 20-hour work days."
