Remote Monitoring of Physiologic Parameters
The CMS guideline that remote monitoring of physiologic
parameters (CPT 99453, 99454, 99457, 99458) may be performed by trained staff under direct supervision was changed
to allow performance of these services under general supervision. Under general supervision, the supervising practitioner
does not need to be present.
AMA CPT finalized CPT 99458 to allow for payment for
more than 20 minutes of interactive communication with patients regarding their monitored physiologic parameters, and
CMS proposed an RVU of 0.5 for this code. APMA commented that the RVU should be higher and suggested an RVU of
0.61. CMS changed its proposal and finalized the RVU as 0.61,
as APMA suggested.
