ow do you learn? Do you prefer traditional lectures or panel discussions? Are
you interested in lively debates or Jeopardy-style questions and answers? What
about absorbing information through visual media or
hands-on learning? Whatever your preferred method of
learning, you will find it at the APMA 2020 Annual Scientific Meeting (The National), July 23-26 in Boston.
The National is the can't-miss meeting for every podiatrist regardless of practice focus or years of experience. The educational program offers up to 29.5 CECH
while covering the gamut of foot and ankle surgery and
medicine. In response to attendee feedback, The National is making several changes this year. Rather than three
tracks, the program will feature two: a surgical track and
a medical track. Surgical lectures cover complications,
trauma, limb preservation, and more. Medical topics include dermatology, sports medicine, biomechanics, disparities, and others. (Check out the preliminary program at www.apma.org/thenational.)
The National continues to evolve and look for new,
innovative ways to deliver education to its attendees.
As part of the educational program this year, The National is honored to screen the groundbreaking medical documentary "Do No Harm," which exposes the
epidemic of physician suicide. The 60-minute screening, taking place Saturday, July 25, at 7 p.m., will be
followed by a panel discussion with wellbeing experts.
Prior to the screening, attendees are invited to enjoy a
wellness reception.
In just a few short years, the Podiatry School Student
Quiz Bowl has become one of the most popular sessions
at The National. This Jeopardy-style competition features one rising fourth-year student from each of the
nine colleges of podiatric medicine. Contestants are tested on a range of podiatric subjects before a raucous and
energetic crowd.
No National is complete without the Harry Goldsmith, DPM, Memorial Coding Seminar. This year, coding experts Jeffrey Lehrman, DPM, and David Freed-

man, DPM, will present. Both presenters are Certified
Professional Coders, a rare distinction within the profession, and proof that APMA is the gold standard in
foot and ankle coding education. Hear about the latest
coding updates, including seismic changes coming to
E/M coding in 2021.
The risk management program at The National is
consistently one of our most popular sessions. This
year's lecture is sure to make an impact. It can be a sobering event when you are notified that you are being
sued for more than $7 million, which is $6.5 million in
excess of your professional liability policy limits. This
lecture will provide insight into a real case and the toll it
takes on the physician, both physically and mentally. In
addition, the presentation will explore how such a lawsuit impacts the practice and the staff. The presenters
will discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the case
and how the team navigated through the challenges by
focusing on the medical and legal aspects.
PICA policyholders attending The National are eligible for up to a 15-percent premium discount for attending the risk management programming. Those attendees who have participated in other meetings or the
home study and received a 10-percent discount can receive an additional 5-percent discount for attending the
risk management programming at The National.
For hands-on learners, The National offers several
options. Attendees can choose from three workshops:
ultrasound, dermoscopy, and ankle arthroscopy. New
this year, The National is also offering a CPR/AED
training course. Each workshop and training course requires an extra fee and has limited space. Make your
choice when you complete your registration to secure
your spot.
The National is also a valuable learning opportunity
for your entire team with the Assistants' Educational
Program, presented in conjunction with the American
Society of Podiatric Medical Assistants. Podiatric medical assistants attend many lectures with their physicians
