CPME Update
Spring 2020 Residency On-Site Visits Deferred
All on-site visits scheduled for the spring on-site cycle have
been deferred to fall 2020. The council will provide by July 6
a complete list of the institutions scheduled for on-site evaluation between September 1 and December 31, to afford individuals or organizations the ability to submit written comments concerning an institution's qualifications for
provisional or continued approval.
Public Notice: Call for Third-Party Comments
The New York College of Podiatric Medicine on-site visit
scheduled for June 2020 has been rescheduled to late fall 2020
or early 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In doing so, the
council extended the college's accreditation term by one year
(to October 2021). In view of the rescheduled site visit, CPME
is once again calling for third-party comment.
In accordance with CPME procedures, interested individuals or institutions are invited to submit third-party
comments with respect to compliance of the New York
College of Podiatric Medicine in New York with the standards and requirements of the council. The council will
take into consideration all comments received by September 15, 2020, as part of the college's on-site evaluation
scheduled for late fall 2020 or early 2021. Comments
must relate specifically to the council's requirements as
published in CPME 120, Standards and Requirements for
Accrediting Colleges of Podiatric Medicine, which may be obtained at www.cpme.org.
Signed comments received by the council will be shared
with the institution and members of the evaluation team prior to the visit. The institution is notified of third-party comments so it may have opportunity to respond. The council
will exercise its best efforts to keep confidential the identity
of an individual or entity that submits a comment, unless the
person or entity has specified in writing that it is permissible
to reveal their or its identity. If confidentiality is appropriate,
all correspondence with the institution will maintain this
confidentiality. During its review of the college, the evaluation team considers third-party comments, if any, that relate
to the accreditation standards.
Please submit third-party comments to:

CPME Spring Meeting
The council held its spring meeting virtually April 30-
May 2. The recommendations emanating from council com28 APMA News May/June 2020
mittees, which completed their deliberations at meetings
and conference calls held from February-April, constitute
the majority of each CPME agenda and include review of
annual reports from the colleges of podiatric medicine. The
Joint Committee on the Recognition of Specialty Boards,
Continuing Education Committee, Residency Review Committee, and Collaborative Residency Evaluator Committee
all held meetings in March. The Accreditation Committee
and the council's Budget Planning and Executive Committees held their meetings virtually.
The CPME Bylaws were revised to address the eligibility
criteria for council members and were adopted. An additional bylaw revision was reviewed and approved, and it is eligible for adoption at the fall council meeting, to address apointments of representatives to non-CPME committees. The
updated bylaws are available at CPME.org.
CPME 925, Complaint Procedure, was clarified related to a
requirement that a complainant must exhaust internal procedures prior to submitting a complaint. The revised procedure
states: "The complainant must be able to demonstrate that
efforts have been exhausted to resolve issues or problems by
means of internal procedures available within the entity. A
complaint will be rejected if implementation of such internal
procedures has not been attempted previously (not applicable for providers of CE when the complainant demonstrates
no internal procedure is available)." The new language appears within the parentheses.
The council approved Draft III of the College Accreditation
Eligibility Requirements. The council determined that based on
the nature and scope of the proposed revisions, the documents
will be reopened for comment this spring with anticipated final adoption at the October 2020 council meeting. CPME 120,
Standards and Requirements for Accrediting Colleges of Podiatric
Medicine, and CPME 130, Procedures for Accrediting Colleges of
Podiatric Medicine, were both adopted at the council's October
2019 meeting for implementation on July 1, 2020.
The council updated the COVID-19 guidance provided to
colleges of podiatric medicine to reaffirm its support for
modifications in programming and to encourage the colleges
to utilize innovative methods of delivering the curriculum
and clerkship experiences during the pandemic. More information can be found at CPME.org.
Residency and fellowship actions taken at the May CPME
meeting included (see pages 13-17 of CPME 330, Procedures
for Approval of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Residencies, and

Fellowships, at CPME.org for definitions of the following categories of approval):
